Leeds boss Daniel Farke admitted his side’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth left him with mixed emotions, describing the result as “a bit heartbreaking” after his team produced a dominant performance only to be pegged back by late drama.

Goals from Joe Rodon and Sean Longstaff looked to have secured all three points for Leeds, but Eli Junior Kroupi’s stoppage-time equaliser denied them victory after Antoine Semenyo had opened the scoring for Bournemouth.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Farke was full of praise for his players despite the frustration. “Of course disappointed because we had a really good game with a really good performance against a strong opponent. We deserved to win this game. We had way more expected goals and shots. We had big chances. We gave away two set-pieces and they scored both. They didn’t have a chance out of the game. Small details can be punished. It feels a bit heartbreaking but I’m proud of the performance.”

Farke on Leeds’ strengths and missed chances

Farke pointed to Leeds’ control and discipline as proof of progress against established Premier League opposition. “We can’t outperform our opponents when you see their quality. Organisation, physicality, big team spirit is what we need. The team reduced Bournemouth to so little chances but they’re a proven Premier League side and they were effective today,” he said.

The manager reserved special praise for individual displays. “Longstaff was outstanding. His workload, his calmness and composure. Calvert-Lewin put in an outstanding performance for the team. A man of the match performance. He showed himself in great shape and fitness level. The only pity is he had so many good chances. On another day he scores two or three.”

Analyst verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William described the draw as “two points dropped” for Leeds. “Farke is right — Bournemouth created very little from open play, but Leeds’ lapses at set-pieces proved costly. For a newly promoted side, though, the performance was very encouraging. They matched a seasoned Premier League club in intensity and creativity.”

He added: “Longstaff’s midfield display stood out, while Calvert-Lewin’s link-up play showed Leeds have a focal point. If they sharpen up defensively on dead-ball situations, results like this could quickly turn into wins.”

What’s next for Leeds?

Leeds will take heart from the performance but know they must tighten up defensively. With winnable fixtures ahead, Farke will look to build on the positives, particularly the form of Longstaff and Calvert-Lewin.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, escape Elland Road with a point thanks to their set-piece efficiency. For Leeds, the late goal will sting, but the broader signs of growth under Farke remain promising.
