Despite ongoing transfer rumors linking him to several clubs ahead of the summer window, Lamare Bogarde is content at Aston Villa and satisfied with his decision to move to England. The 21-year-old midfielder believes Villa's impressive rise into the Champions League arena has proven his decision was the right one, despite some initial doubts when he first made the move.
Having made 16 appearances for Villa this season, including a key performance in the 3-1 victory over Club Brugge earlier this month, Bogarde's rise is continuing at pace. Currently away on international duty with the Netherlands under-21s, Bogarde was asked about his future prospects, particularly regarding the growing speculation linking him to a potential move to Eredivisie giants Ajax.
“I have seen it pass by, yes,” he told Voetbal International of speculation linking him with a move home. “It’s great that a big club like Ajax is interested in you. Yes, with respect to Aston Villa, I am still under contract with them. My future will soon be more coming out. Right now, I’m just happy at Aston Villa. We will come to a decision together.”
“They then explained to that me the plan was to become a large club in England,” he told De Telegraaf. “When I came, the club was on the verge of relegation. Now they’re in the Champions League.
Lamare Bogarde recalled the move he completed back in 2020 - at a time when Covid remained at the forefront of everyday life - and how Villa convinced him to leave Feyenoord behind with their plans for the future - plans which have since materialised.
“They then explained to that me the plan was to become a large club in England,” he told De Telegraaf. “When I came, the club was on the verge of relegation. Now they’re in the Champions League.
"There have been so many people who had difficulty understanding my choice at the time but look at what is now coming from those plans. So, I expected it somewhere. You never know how it will really really go, but this is what you hope for when you go abroad at a young age.”
On Emery himself, Bogarde declared that he would run through fire for his revered manager, such is the regard he holds him in.
“He is obsessed with the game and how he deals with the players, so passionately too, that is beautiful to see,” he added. “If you communicate like he does, you also get a lot of respect in return. He is very specific with players, including me. He gave me the chance he promised me if I continued to invest in myself. Then you go through fire for someone.”
