Kevin De Bruyne has confirmed that he will leave Manchester City at the end of the current season, bringing an end to a remarkable 10-year spell at the Premier League champions.
Since joining City in 2015, the 33-year-old Belgian has established himself as one of the greatest midfielders the Premier League has ever seen. His stats are a testament to his brilliance: he holds the records for the most chances created (827), most big chances created (193), and most assists (117) in the league.
Rumors had been circulating for some time about De Bruyne’s future, with the midfielder's contract set to expire this summer and reports linking him with a move to the Saudi Pro League. Talks over a new deal were put on hold last November, and although Pep Guardiola expressed a desire for De Bruyne to remain at the Etihad in February, he emphasized that the decision was ultimately in the player’s hands.
After taking over as City captain following Kyle Walker's departure in January, many hoped that the legendary playmaker would extend his stay in Manchester for at least another year. But in a heartfelt statement shared on social media, De Bruyne revealed that this season would be his last with the club.
"Seeing this, you probably realise where this is heading. So I’ll get straight to it and let you all know that these will be my final months as a Manchester City player."
"Nothing about this is easy to write, but as football players, we all know this day eventually comes. That day is here – and you deserve to hear it from me first."
De Bruyne went on to reflect on his journey and the impact Manchester City has had on his life, both personally and professionally.
"Football led me to all of you – and to this city. Chasing my dream, not knowing this period would change my life."
"This City. This club. These people… gave me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING back! And guess what – we won everything."
"Whether we like it or not, it’s time to say goodbye. Suri, Rome, Mason, Michele, and I are beyond grateful for what this place has meant to our family."
"‘Manchester’ will forever be on our kids’ passports – and more importantly, in each of our hearts. This will always be our HOME."
The emotional farewell continued with De Bruyne expressing his gratitude to everyone at the club, from the staff to his teammates.
"We cannot thank the city, club, staff, teammates, friends, and family enough for this 10-year ride. Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter."
"Let’s enjoy these last moments together! Much love, 'KDB.'"
As De Bruyne prepares to leave, Manchester City will undoubtedly be saying goodbye to one of their greatest-ever players, a man who has helped define the club’s modern era of success.
