Jurrien Timber joined Arsenal from Ajax in July 2023 in a €40m deal, arriving with high expectations after establishing himself as one of the Eredivisie’s most talented defenders.
But just 45 minutes into his Premier League debut, Timber suffered a devastating ACL injury. It was his first major setback as a professional, ruling him out for 253 days and causing him to miss 53 matches for club and country.
For a player who had barely experienced injury before, the blow was enormous.
Timber: “It Didn’t Really Sink In”
Speaking to Helden, Timber admitted that the reality of his cruciate ligament tear was hard to process:
“When I was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, it didn’t really sink in. I’d just made a good transfer and never really suffered from injuries before. Then it suddenly dawned on me that I was out for a season. One month I felt great, the next I felt despondent and thought: it’s going to take so long… My emotions were up and down.” — Jurrien Timber
He added that while he never thought about his €40m transfer fee, he did need to find confirmation in his game once he returned:
“Of course, there were doubts; I needed to get my feeling back on the pitch. Not that I thought: what was I good at again? But I needed some confirmation: this is what I’m good at.”
Arsenal’s Support and Recovery
Timber credited Arsenal’s medical staff, teammates and Mikel Arteta for giving him the confidence to return without fear.
“To be honest, I didn’t think about my price tag. I was busy getting fit and was eager to show myself again. But that was also due to the confidence I received from the team and the coaches. Before my injury, I had played well, so they really knew what I was capable of,” he said.
Since his return, the Dutchman has quickly re-established himself, making 54 appearances across competitions for Arsenal and providing versatility across the backline.

Analyst Verdict
FootballPlace analyst John William believes Timber’s mental strength has been as important as his physical recovery:
“Coming back from an ACL is as much psychological as physical. Timber’s honesty about needing reassurance shows how players process setbacks. But the fact he’s back as a regular starter for Arsenal so quickly underlines both his resilience and Arsenal’s careful management of his recovery.”
