Croatia’s national team doctor has offered a cautiously optimistic update on Manchester City defender Joško Gvardiol, describing his injury situation as “particularly difficult” but expressing hope he will be fit for the summer’s World Cup.

Gvardiol suffered a fractured tibia during Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea on 4 January and subsequently underwent surgery. Initial assessments suggested he could face several months out, raising fears he might miss the tournament.

Joško Gvardiol injury update eases World Cup concerns

Croatian outlet Večernji list reports that early projections were serious enough to create genuine anxiety within the Croatian Football Federation (HNS).

HNS head of medical services Tomislav Vlahović has now sought to reassure supporters.

“We hope that Joško will recover in time for the World Cup. We believe this is realistic. You never know how things will develop during rehabilitation, but our hope is strong,” he said.

Vlahović added that the fractured tibia is expected to heal within approximately five months, though rehabilitation progress will determine final timelines.

Having followed Manchester City’s defensive structure this season, Gvardiol’s absence has required adjustments across the back line. His recovery would be significant not only for Croatia but also for Pep Guardiola’s squad planning next term.

Positive signs for Mateo Kovačić

There was further encouragement regarding Mateo Kovačić, who has not featured for Manchester City since October. The midfielder underwent surgery later that month, with early forecasts targeting a February return.

According to Večernji list, his recovery is “progressing faster than expected”, and Guardiola could potentially have him available from early March.

Vlahović echoed that optimism.

“I would say we think he will be ready for the World Cup, and probably even earlier. It is a complex injury and treatment, and things are being monitored on a daily basis. The recovery is going well.”

It remains too early to draw firm conclusions about either player’s availability for the tournament, as rehabilitation timelines can shift. However, the tone from Croatia’s medical staff is clearly more positive than initial projections suggested.
