Josh Cullen insists Burnley can still make season “successful” despite six-game losing run

Burnley captain Josh Cullen remains steadfast in his belief that the Clarets can turn their season around, despite sliding to a sixth straight defeat in last weekend’s loss to Newcastle United. Scott Parker’s side showed character in their fightback with 10 men at St James’ Park, but the result leaves them five points from safety heading into a crucial home fixture against Fulham.

Many outside the club have already written Burnley off, but Cullen — speaking to Burnley’s YouTube channel — insists the squad are far from finished.

“We’ve got 23 games to go now,” he said. “Every game is going to be massive for us. We need our fans behind us, we need the place rocking, we need to make Turf Moor horrible for teams that come here. We can feed off that, and hopefully we give them a performance to feed off too.”

Cullen emphasised that belief within the squad has not wavered, even amid their poor run of form.

“We know where we are, we know we’re in a tough spell, but we’ll keep working harder than ever. I honestly believe we’ll turn the corner and make the season a successful one.”

Cullen calls for smarter game management

While praising Burnley’s resilience at Newcastle — particularly after the red card — Cullen acknowledged that the team must start capitalising on momentum during matches.

“When we’re on top and we have spells and momentum, we have to make sure we have something to show for it. That’s where we need to improve.”

Burnley’s inability to convert good passages of play into goals has been a recurring issue this season. Too often they have dominated periods of games only to concede soft goals or lose control during key moments.

Yet Cullen praised the determination his side showed in adversity on Tyneside.

“To go behind how we did, and then with the red card, to stay in the game like we did — I’m really proud of the boys. We can take a lot of positives from this.”

He believes those qualities, if sustained, can provide the foundation for a turnaround across the second half of the campaign.

Belief matters — but Burnley need results quickly

In our view, Cullen’s resolve reflects the mentality Burnley will require if they are to escape relegation trouble. The attitude is right, and the squad clearly remain behind Parker, but survival will depend on turning defiance into points — and that must start immediately.

A home match against Fulham is precisely the sort of fixture Burnley must now win. Turf Moor is historically one of the league’s toughest away grounds when the atmosphere builds, and Cullen’s rallying cry to supporters feels timely. Burnley need energy, aggression and clarity in both boxes — areas where they have often fallen short.

There is enough quality in the squad to compete, but the margin for error is shrinking fast.
