Chelsea have struck a full agreement with Ajax to sign highly rated defender Jorrel Hato, with the deal now awaiting final approval from the Dutch club’s supervisory board.
The Blues will pay a fee in excess of €40 million, with Ajax also securing a sell-on clause as part of the agreement. Personal terms are already settled, and Hato is set to sign a contract until June 2032.
The 19-year-old Netherlands international is expected to travel to London for his medical once the green light is given from Amsterdam. Sources close to the deal indicate Chelsea moved quickly to finalise terms after long-standing interest in the versatile left-sided defender.
This marks a significant breakthrough after weeks of back-and-forth negotiations, with Ajax initially holding out for a higher figure. The Eredivisie side have now softened their stance amid financial pressures and growing belief that Hato was ready for a Premier League step.
The move, once formally completed, will make Hato one of the most expensive defensive exports in Ajax history.
Hato’s Desire and Chelsea’s Strategic Move
Multiple reports confirm Hato’s personal ambition to join Chelsea has been decisive in accelerating the deal. Described as “convinced already,” the defender has told both Ajax management and his manager that he wants to move to Stamford Bridge, tipping the balance in negotiations
After initially pricing him at €55–60m, Ajax sources now appear comfortable accepting a lower fee, reportedly due to financial pressure and Hato’s clear commitment to the move
Jorrel Hato — Profile & Potential
At just 19, Hato has already become Ajax’s youngest captain and earned senior status with the Netherlands, making over 100 first-team appearances.
Capable of playing both as a left-back and centre-back, he offers tactical flexibility and leadership rare for someone so young. Chelsea see him as a critical addition under Enzo Maresca’s system, particularly with their pressing demands and ball‑playing style
Analyst Verdict: A Key Signing for Chelsea’s Future
This move ticks every box: a premium young talent, versatility, leadership, and a genuine emotional tie to the move. It’s rare to combine elite football traits with character and humility — and Chelsea seem to have struck gold.
Chelsea’s patience in negotiation seems to have paid off. They stuck to their valuation, held firm at around €40m, and then watched Ajax close in on a compromise. With personal terms already signed and board approval expected, this feels like a proper transfer win for Enzo Maresca and his recruitment team.

Best young left-back, by far! What a season he had for Ajax as a left back last season. Season before he was a CB - but he came too short for that position, not only his height but I didnt liked him in that position. Looking forward to Hato at Chelsea. Xavi next and we are done this window, 10 out of 10 window!
