Jordan Beyer has opened up on the nightmare knee injury that has kept him sidelined for more than 18 months, revealing that pressure in his joint eventually caused the bone to bleed.

Speaking on the Athletes Grind Code podcast, the 24-year-old Burnley centre-back described the complicated setback that first began with a meniscus tear in October 2023 against Luton.

“It all started in October 2023 against Luton. That’s when I tore my inner meniscus. It wasn’t a big deal, just a pretty simple operation: they cut off a small piece,” Beyer explained. “But something got jammed in my knee when I made a wrong move. It felt like a small piece was stuck in my knee joint.”

How the injury of Jordan Beyer worsened

Beyer initially managed to return after a month out, even completing 90 minutes against Liverpool, but the problem grew worse. His final appearance came on December 30, 2023, against Aston Villa, when he managed just 17 minutes.

Despite consultations with specialists, the true source of the problem was only discovered during surgery in August 2024.

“After ten minutes (in August 2024), I went in and said: I’m not coming back until I have surgery. You can guess three times what they found. The cartilage that had detached from the knee and remained stuck in the joint. The pressure caused the bone to bleed.” — Jordan Beyer

The diagnosis explained why he had been unable to recover, leading to an extraordinary 548 days without competitive football and missing 68 matches for Burnley.

Injury setbacks continue

As if the knee problem wasn’t enough, Beyer then suffered a hamstring injury during his rehabilitation, sidelining him for an additional 69 days and five more games this season.

His determination to return, however, remains strong, and Burnley medical staff are optimistic he will be available before the end of 2025.

Analyst Verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William says Beyer’s honesty highlights the brutal side of football:

“Beyer’s story is a stark reminder of how quickly a routine injury can spiral into something career-threatening. The fact his knee cartilage caused bone bleeding explains why recovery took so long. Burnley will welcome his return because he brings composure and leadership in defence. If he can put this behind him, it will feel like a new signing.”
