Manchester City defender John Stones has poured cold water on transfer speculation, insisting he is fully committed to the Premier League champions. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, the 31-year-old said the Etihad Stadium feels like home and made it clear he is open to staying beyond the end of his current deal in 2026.
Stones joined City from Everton in 2016 and has since lifted multiple Premier League titles, four League Cups, two FA Cups, and the Champions League. Despite persistent rumours about his future — partly fuelled by injury setbacks last season — the England international says leaving is not on his agenda.
“Maybe Never”
“The rumours I hear are ridiculous. This is my home. I’d like to stay. Maybe never [leave], and I’m a little emotional,” Stones told Corriere dello Sport.
The Barnsley-born defender reflected on his journey at City, recalling the calibre of teammates he joined in 2016 and the unexpected scale of the club’s success under Pep Guardiola.
“I had hoped for it, maybe dreamed of it. The team was already strong — Agüero, De Bruyne, Silva, Yaya Touré — but the number of trophies we won was unpredictable. I never imagined I’d be part of the best team in the world for so many years. I’m extremely proud of that.”
Analyst Verdict
Stones’ comments leave little doubt over his desire to remain a key part of Guardiola’s plans. However, his future may hinge on availability — the centre-back missed more than 25 games last season through injury, forcing City to adapt in defence. If he can stay fit, there is every chance the club will offer him an extension before his deal runs down.
For Guardiola, having Stones’ calmness on the ball, tactical intelligence, and ability to step into midfield remains invaluable — particularly in high-pressure matches.

What’s Next
Manchester City are expected to review Stones’ contract situation during the 2025/26 season. Much will depend on his fitness and Guardiola’s long-term plans. Should Manchester City hand Stones a contract extension now, or wait to see if he stays injury-free this season?
