Aston Villa captain John McGinn has warned his side not to underestimate a difficult Premier League test against Everton when the two meet at Villa Park on Sunday.
Villa are chasing a 12th consecutive home win in all competitions, a run stretching back to September, but McGinn is expecting another tight encounter after the sides played out a goalless draw at Goodison Park earlier in the season.
“It will be a tough game,” McGinn said.
“They’ve got a lot of injuries and a couple of players away at AFCON, but we were probably lucky to get a point at Everton away, so we won’t be taking them lightly at all.
“I know the manager and the coaching staff from being Scottish, I know Jack well, Tim and a few of their other players, so there are no easy games in this league.
“We need to be at our best again to try and keep the run going and keep climbing the table.”
Villa momentum building at home
Unai Emery’s side return to Villa Park in confident mood after a positive start to their FA Cup campaign, edging past Tottenham Hotspur 2–1 in north London last weekend.
That victory underlined Villa’s ability to balance domestic and cup commitments, with the club now competing on three fronts during the second half of the season.
McGinn acknowledged the challenge ahead but stressed the importance of maintaining focus amid growing optimism.
“We’re in a great position domestically, you never know what we can achieve there,” he said.
“In Europe, we’re in a strong position to qualify and we have two games left in that, and then we have the FA Cup.
“It’s a very exciting few months ahead but we need to take it step by step and approach it in the way we have been approaching it.”
No room for complacency
Despite Everton’s injury issues and absentees, McGinn made it clear that Villa cannot afford any drop in standards if they are to maintain their impressive home form and continue climbing the Premier League table.
With Villa Park becoming an increasingly difficult venue for visiting sides, Sunday’s clash offers another opportunity to underline their credentials — provided they heed their captain’s warning.
