Club Brugge defender Joel Ordóñez has fuelled speculation about a possible Premier League move after admitting he grew up supporting Liverpool.

The Ecuador international spoke about his ambitions during a recent interview in Belgium, where he also addressed interest from several English clubs following a rejected bid from Crystal Palace earlier this year.

Ordóñez, 21, remains under contract at Club Brugge until 2029, but the defender has made it clear that playing in the Premier League is a long-term goal.

Joel Ordóñez Liverpool admiration emerges after Crystal Palace bid

Crystal Palace attempted to sign the centre-back during the January transfer window, reportedly submitting an offer worth around €40 million.

Club Brugge ultimately rejected the proposal, with the player preferring to remain in Belgium until the end of the season.

When asked about the interest from Palace, Ordóñez suggested that he was aware of the offer but had already made a decision to stay for the remainder of the campaign.

“That could be. But I wanted to finish the season at Club anyway, so that wasn’t an option.” — Interview with Gazet van Antwerpen

The defender then acknowledged his admiration for Liverpool while discussing his Premier League ambitions.

“I hope so. It would be great if I could go to the Premier League. That’s my favourite league. As a child, I was also a big Liverpool fan.” — Joel Ordóñez

Rising Club Brugge star attracting Premier League interest

Ordóñez joined Club Brugge in 2022 and initially developed within the club’s reserve setup before establishing himself in the first team.

His performances in Belgium have steadily raised his profile across Europe, particularly among Premier League clubs looking for young defensive prospects. Ordóñez has stood out for his physical presence and composure in possession, traits that often attract interest from English teams.

However, it remains too early to confirm whether Liverpool will pursue the defender during the upcoming transfer window.

Club Brugge likely to demand major fee

The rejected Crystal Palace bid may provide an indication of Club Brugge’s valuation ahead of the summer window.

With several years remaining on his contract, the Belgian side are under little pressure to sell unless their asking price is met.

Ordóñez is currently valued at around €28 million according to market estimates, although the club may reference the previous €40 million offer during negotiations.

Key Insights

What’s Next?

Ordóñez is expected to remain at Club Brugge until the end of the current season, with discussions about a potential transfer likely to intensify in the summer.

Premier League clubs may revisit their interest once the campaign concludes, particularly if the defender continues his development in Belgium.

Any move, however, would likely require negotiations starting from the €40 million mark previously offered by Crystal Palace.

Would Joel Ordóñez be a smart defensive investment for Liverpool if the club enters the transfer race?
