Scott Parker has hailed Joe Worrall’s impact after the defender’s recent return to Burnley’s starting XI, describing the centre-back as a “top professional” who has seized his opportunity.
Worrall, 29, has started Burnley’s last two Premier League fixtures against Crystal Palace and Chelsea, having previously made just one league start all season. His reintroduction comes after a difficult spell disrupted by injury and fierce competition for places.
Scott Parker praises Joe Worrall return
The former Nottingham Forest captain delivered composed performances at Selhurst Park and Stamford Bridge, bringing leadership and organisational strength to Burnley’s defence.
Parker acknowledged that Worrall’s path back into the team had not been straightforward.
“I’ve been delighted with Joe. He’s a guy with real experience.
For Joe, it’s been probably pretty difficult from when he first came in. Obviously, down to injury, he came out the side. CJ [Egan-Riley], at the time, going in and doing what he did, there was probably no avenue for him to get back in.
But he’s a top professional, top human being. He’s been an absolute team player. He was a focal point of that last year as well, he was pivotal to what we did, although there was less time on the pitch.
And again this year, I’ve obviously decided at times not to go with him. But he got in the team at Bournemouth, did really, really well, but got injured.
He’s got his opportunity now and he’s grabbed it with both hands, so I’ve been hugely impressed with him and pleased with him. So, long may that continue.”

Burnley defensive selection explained
Worrall’s earlier momentum was halted by injury shortly after impressing against Bournemouth in December. In his absence, CJ Egan-Riley cemented a starting role, limiting avenues for reintegration.
Having followed Burnley’s recent performances, Parker has clearly prioritised consistency in defensive partnerships. However, Worrall’s experience and positional awareness have added balance in the last two outings.
It remains too early to suggest he has permanently reclaimed a starting berth. Much will depend on upcoming fixtures and squad fitness levels.

Burnley face a crucial stretch of fixtures in March as they look to build momentum. If Worrall maintains his current form, Parker may be reluctant to alter the defensive setup.
However, squad rotation and tactical matchups could influence selection decisions in the coming weeks.
Can Joe Worrall turn this opportunity into a sustained run in Burnley’s back line?
