Aston Villa confirm João Palhinha talks as Bayern Munich price hurdle emerges

Aston Villa sporting director Damian Vidagany has confirmed the club are in negotiations with Bayern Munich over a move for João Palhinha, although the two clubs remain some distance from reaching an agreement.

The Portugal international has emerged as one of Villa's leading midfield targets after returning to Bayern following his loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur, with the Bundesliga champions prepared to sell the 31-year-old this summer.

Speaking after Aston Villa's 2-1 pre-season defeat to Bayern Munich in Hong Kong, Vidagany acknowledged discussions are underway but stressed no agreement has been reached.

"We need a midfielder because Amadou Onana is out for the entire season – and João Palhinha is a very good player who would fit our plans. We are in talks, but there is currently no agreement. If something were to happen, it would always be based on the great respect we have for Bayern."

Vidagany also praised the relationship between the two clubs but declined to discuss the negotiations in greater detail.

The Villa director believes the club's recent progress under Unai Emery makes Villa Park an attractive destination despite competing with wealthier Premier League rivals.

"I believe Aston Villa would be a great club for the player. We've qualified for international competitions every year for the past four years. That's down to our project, our work as a team, and the tactical influence of Unai Emery."

According to the report, Palhinha currently favours a move to Aston Villa, with the opportunity to work under Emery viewed as a key factor.

Despite positive talks, Bayern's valuation continues to complicate negotiations.

The German champions are reportedly demanding €25 million for a permanent transfer, a figure Aston Villa are currently unwilling to meet. The clubs have also been unable to agree on a loan deal that includes an option to buy.

Villa must also negotiate personal terms with Palhinha, who is expected to seek an attractive sporting and financial package before committing to the move.

Benfica are also monitoring the midfielder's situation, although Villa are believed to be the player's preferred destination.

Negotiations between Aston Villa and Bayern Munich are expected to continue as both clubs attempt to bridge the gap in valuation before the transfer window closes. Villa must also reach an agreement with Palhinha on personal terms, while Bayern remain keen to secure a permanent transfer for the midfielder this summer.
