Joachim Andersen has urged Fulham to “keep our heads high” after a punishing first half at Manchester City left them chasing the game from an early stage.
City struck three times inside the opening 15 minutes on Wednesday night, overwhelming Fulham before the visitors had settled. Despite a more resilient display after the interval, the damage had already been done.
Joachim Andersen reacts after Fulham defeat to Manchester City
“It was really tough,” Andersen admitted. “I think City played really well first half and were clinical.
“We defended a little bit too much, we wanted to press them a little bit higher, but I think we became too passive in the first half and they had the ball quite easily with no real pressure, and that made it difficult for us.”
Fulham attempted to adjust after the break, looking to replicate the fighting spirit they showed in a previous meeting at home. However, without an early second-half goal to shift momentum, City remained comfortable.
“Obviously when you’re 3-0 behind at half-time, it’s tough, but we said to ourselves that we had to give it a go,” Andersen said. “At least we tried, and everyone fought really, really hard second half. Of course we’re disappointed, but we have to go again.”
Fine margins in recent results
The defeat leaves Fulham with just one win in their last five Premier League matches, yet Andersen insists the broader picture is not as bleak as the numbers suggest.
“Of course, the results lately have not been going our way,” he said. “I think we’ve been a little bit unfortunate – against United we deserved more, we should at least get a draw there, and last game against Everton we should be three or four up at half-time.”
Having followed Fulham’s recent performances closely, the margins have indeed been narrow in several fixtures. However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions about momentum, particularly given the quality of opposition faced.
“City away is a tough game,” Andersen added. “So we’ll keep our heads high and go again.”
