JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United exit request explained as Premier League decision could follow

JJ Gabriel’s future at Manchester United has suddenly become uncertain after the 15-year-old reportedly asked the club to cancel his registration.

Gabriel is considered one of United’s leading academy prospects and has already been brought into Michael Carrick’s first-team environment. However, reports suggest frustration over his pathway into senior football has led the winger to consider leaving Old Trafford.

Manchester United have not agreed to his request and are reportedly still hoping to convince the youngster to stay.

Gabriel joined Manchester United at 11 and has quickly established himself as one of the most highly rated players in the academy.

In April 2025, he became United’s youngest-ever Under-18 player and marked the occasion by scoring twice against Leeds United. He was subsequently named the club’s Under-18 player of the year and earned opportunities to train with Carrick’s senior squad.

The teenager also featured during pre-season, but his involvement was limited.

Gabriel played only eight minutes and travelled with the squad to Norway for the friendly against Rosenborg. Despite Carrick making 11 substitutions during that match, Gabriel remained on the bench.

Reports suggest the player believes expectations were set regarding first-team opportunities that have not subsequently been fulfilled.

His omission from United’s Champions League squad to face Sabah FK last week is believed to have increased that frustration.

Gabriel had also been discussed as a potential option for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton, which could have provided an opportunity for his competitive senior debut.

Instead, the uncertainty surrounding his future now appears likely to prevent that possibility.

Gabriel cannot simply terminate his Manchester United registration unilaterally.

According to the Premier League rules cited in the original report, cancelling a youth player's registration during the registration period requires agreement between the club, player and parent or carer.

If those parties cannot reach an agreement, one of them can ask the Premier League to make a binding decision on the termination request.

That means United currently retain Gabriel’s registration and have a significant say in what happens next.

The club reportedly remain hopeful that discussions can resolve the dispute without the matter progressing further.

Unsurprisingly, the uncertainty has attracted attention elsewhere.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are all reported to be monitoring Gabriel.

United's immediate priority, however, appears to be repairing the relationship with one of their most valuable academy prospects rather than facilitating his departure.

With Gabriel still only 15, his development pathway and opportunities at senior level are likely to be central to whatever happens next.

Manchester United will attempt to convince Gabriel that his long-term development is best served at Old Trafford.

If no agreement can be reached between the relevant parties, the dispute could eventually be referred to the Premier League for a binding decision over his registration.

Until then, Gabriel remains registered with Manchester United despite his reported desire to leave.
