Sunderland prepare €22m offer for Jhon Lucumí – agent working on La Liga options

Sunderland are stepping up their pursuit of Jhon Lucumí, with multiple Italian reports confirming that the promoted Premier League side are preparing a second offer worth €22 million in total.

The Black Cats had an initial bid rejected by Bologna, but according to Quotidiano Sportivo, the club are ready to go back in — on the condition that Lucumí signals his willingness to join.

As previously reported by Football Place on July 23 (read the full report), Bournemouth had also shown interest, though their role increasingly appears to be that of leverage in negotiations.

Sunderland's new offer would bring them within touching distance of Bologna’s €25m valuation. But the deal hinges on one key factor: Lucumí must indicate that he's ready to make the move to the Stadium of Light.

Manager Regis Le Bris has made the Colombia international a defensive priority, and the Premier League side are aiming to make a strong statement in the market.

However, the player’s agent is currently in Spain, actively working to generate interest from La Liga — with Villarreal the most likely destination if a Spanish move materialises.

Earlier reports suggested that Bournemouth’s name was being used to accelerate Sunderland’s negotiations. Il Resto del Carlino reported on July 24 that Bournemouth’s previous bid remains on the table, but there’s no sign that the Cherries will return with improved terms.

That leaves Sunderland as the most serious contender — at least for now.

At 27, Lucumí would arrive as a ready-made leader at the back — bringing top-level European experience to a young Sunderland side looking to push for promotion.

Physically strong, left-footed, and confident in possession, he could become one of the standout defenders in the Premier League — if Sunderland get the green light.

Sunderland are waiting for Lucumí’s response before submitting their second bid to Bologna. If the Colombian defender agrees to terms, the €22m proposal could be accepted quickly — leaving only personal terms and medical checks to finalise.

However, the situation could change if a La Liga club steps in with a formal offer, particularly Villarreal, who remain on alert. Until then, Sunderland are in the strongest position — but the ball is firmly in Lucumí’s court.
