Newcastle United assistant manager Jason Tindall has confirmed that head coach Eddie Howe will only resume his duties once he has fully recovered from a bout of pneumonia that has sidelined him since Friday evening, April 11.
The 47-year-old was admitted to hospital after several days of feeling unwell and has since been diagnosed with pneumonia. With Howe now facing a period of rest and recovery, the club has not placed a timeline on his return.
Tindall, alongside first-team coach Graeme Jones, will take charge of the team during Howe’s absence as the Magpies continue their push for a top-five Premier League finish — a position that could secure Champions League football for the second time in three seasons.
“There is no fixed return date,” Tindall explained. “It’s something we’ll take one day at a time. He’s receiving excellent care, and his recovery will be completely guided by medical advice.”
Focus on Health and Stability
Howe’s absence was felt across the club, but Newcastle managed to deliver a dominant 4-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, a performance that left them just one point behind third-placed Nottingham Forest with a game in hand.
As the team prepares to host an in-form Crystal Palace on Wednesday, Tindall confirmed that Howe will remain on the sidelines and continue to follow the action from afar.
“Health comes first,” said Tindall. “It’s vital that when Eddie does return, he’s fully fit and ready to lead the group the way only he can.”
He continued, “Eddie is very pragmatic. He’ll listen to the guidance he’s being given and make sure he’s 100 percent before stepping back in. Of course, we want him back as soon as possible, but only when he’s truly ready.”
Tindall Prepared to Lead During Crucial Run-In
Tindall, who has worked alongside Howe for 17 years — including a spell managing Bournemouth in his own right — expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to stay focused during what could be a defining period of the campaign. Newcastle have seven games remaining and remain in the hunt for European qualification.
“My role is to step in and maintain stability until Eddie is ready. We’ll keep things consistent and keep pushing,” Tindall added.
He also confirmed that Joe Willock is available for selection again after recovering from a concussion, providing a welcome boost to the midfield options ahead of a busy week.
As the Magpies aim for a strong finish, the message from the dugout is clear: there is no rush — Howe’s health takes priority, and he will only return when fully fit and cleared to do so.
