Everton midfielder James Garner has addressed his future amid growing transfer interest from Newcastle United, insisting he remains focused on his performances rather than off-field speculation.
The 24-year-old has been one of Everton’s standout players this season, thriving under David Moyes in both midfield and right-back roles. His form has not only attracted interest from Newcastle but also sparked calls for a first England call-up ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
“No talks” over new Everton deal
Speaking exclusively to FourFourTwo, Garner revealed that contract discussions with Everton have yet to begin, despite his current deal expiring in 2026.
“All I know at the moment [is] nothing's going [on]. There’s been no talks. I know, obviously, my contract’s up in the summer but from my side, I’ve heard nothing,” he said.
While his comments raised eyebrows, the midfielder made it clear he’s content at Goodison Park and fully focused on his football.
“I’m enjoying my football, of course. It’s been a great start to the season for the club, and I’ve started quite well myself. I just need to keep on improving, keep on winning games and add a little bit more.”
Garner earns £30,000 per week on his current deal, which runs until June 2026, and The Telegraph recently claimed that Newcastle have identified him as a potential summer target as Rúben Amorim seeks two new midfielders for next season.
Eyes on England call-up
Garner, part of the UEFA Team of the Tournament when England won the 2023 Under-21 Euros, is determined to make his senior breakthrough under Thomas Tuchel.
He believes consistency and productivity are key to forcing his way into the squad.
“I feel I’ve got the quality to play in the team. I just need to show it on a more regular basis,” he said. “Today’s game, unfortunately, is all about statistics. I need to go out there and get some stats to myself — goals, assists. That’s only going to help me.”
So far this season, Garner has contributed one goal and one assist in 13 Premier League appearances, while maintaining an 88% pass accuracy and averaging 2.5 tackles and 3.7 ball recoveries per game.

Moyes full of praise for midfield mainstay
Everton manager David Moyes has been equally impressed by Garner’s consistency and versatility this season.
“He’s been fantastic since I came in,” Moyes said. “I didn’t realise probably how good he was. He’s played great in midfield and he’s played full-back for me as well. I’ve said a couple of times recently he’s probably getting closer to being talked about for England because of his performances.”
Moyes’ comments underline how integral the former Manchester United academy product has become to Everton’s setup — and why interest from top-flight rivals is growing.
Our View: Garner’s calm approach makes sense
In our view, Garner’s comments reflect a mature, grounded approach to his situation. While speculation over a Newcastle move will persist, his focus on performance and development is exactly what Everton need during a transitional phase under Moyes.
If his form continues, Everton will likely look to open new contract talks before summer — both to reward his progress and to ward off potential suitors. For Newcastle, however, Garner’s combination of technical quality, tactical flexibility, and homegrown status makes him a logical target as Amorim reshapes his midfield options.
