Everton midfielder James Garner has admitted he’s still waiting to hear from the club regarding a new deal, despite being one of David Moyes’ most consistent performers this season.
The 24-year-old, who joined the Toffees from Manchester United in 2022, is out of contract in June 2026 and has now confirmed that no discussions have yet taken place about extending his stay at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Contract uncertainty at Everton
Everton recently moved to secure the long-term future of Jordan Pickford, with the England No.1 signing a new deal until 2029. However, several other key squad members — including Garner, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Seamus Coleman, and Michael Keane — are all approaching the final year of their contracts.
While Moyes has been clear about his desire to maintain the club’s core group, Everton’s hierarchy have so far remained cautious about committing to further extensions, possibly influenced by the club’s ongoing financial strategy and wage structure.
Garner confirmed his own situation remains uncertain during an interview with FourFourTwo, saying he hasn’t received any updates from the board or his representatives.
“All I know at the moment is nothing’s going on,” Garner said. “There’s been no talks. I know, obviously, my contract’s up in the summer but from my side, I’ve heard nothing.”
Garner focused on performances, not talks
Despite the uncertainty, Garner says his full focus is on helping Everton continue their strong start to the season. The midfielder has been one of Moyes’ most-used players so far, starting every Premier League and cup game — often shifting between central midfield and right-back.
“I’m enjoying my football, of course. It’s been a great start to the season for the club, and I’ve started quite well myself. I just need to keep on improving, keep on winning games and add a little bit more,” he added.
Garner’s versatility and consistency have made him an invaluable part of Moyes’ system, with the manager repeatedly praising his tactical awareness and composure in possession.

Lessons from last season
Everton’s handling of contract renewals has already drawn scrutiny after Dominic Calvert-Lewin left the club on a free transfer last summer, following a breakdown in talks over a new deal. Moyes is believed to be keen to avoid a similar situation with Garner, who has developed into a trusted squad member.
Garner’s current deal expires in nine months, meaning Everton must make a decision soon — either tie him down with new terms or risk losing him for free next year.
Our View
In our view, Everton can ill afford to repeat the mistakes of the past. Garner’s age, attitude, and adaptability make him an ideal player to keep as part of Moyes’ evolving squad. While not the flashiest midfielder, he embodies the club’s work ethic and tactical discipline.
With financial fair play still looming over recruitment, securing players like Garner — who already fit the system and have resale potential — would represent smart business for the Toffees.
Analyst Verdict
FootballPlace analyst John William writes:
James Garner’s situation feels very Everton — a player doing everything right on the pitch while the club drags its feet off it. At 24, he’s entering his prime and has proven he can handle the Premier League tempo.
If Everton are serious about stability, they should prioritise a new contract for him before January. Losing him for free would be another costly misstep.
