Jadon Sancho has come under criticism after reacting angrily to being substituted during Aston Villa’s 2–1 win at Basel in the Europa League on Thursday night. The Manchester United loanee, who is still searching for his first Premier League start under Unai Emery, was withdrawn in the 64th minute and punched a dugout seat before taking his place on the bench.

It was Sancho’s fourth consecutive Europa League start but another performance in which he failed to impose himself. The 25-year-old remains on the fringes of Villa’s strongest XI, with Emery yet to start him in a Premier League match this season — a clear indication that he has not met the tactical or physical demands expected.

Sancho slammed by former Villa scout Bryan King

Sancho’s reaction drew sharp criticism from Bryan King, a former Aston Villa scout who initially highlighted the winger’s potential during his England youth days.

“One day he’ll look back and realise how much money he’s making from football. All these players can sort themselves out if they find consistency off the field.” — Bryan King

King, who spent more than a decade scouting for Villa, did not hold back when assessing Sancho’s behaviour.

“He was the best talent I saw at the under-17s EUROs. Where he’s gone wrong is off the field. Sancho looks to me as if he doesn’t want to be at Villa — if that’s the case, then cheerio.”

The former scout added that Sancho must respect the club and keep frustrations behind closed doors.

“You don’t use a football club like Aston Villa just to earn money. When people hit out when they come off, that’s fine — but make sure it’s in the dressing room. It’s no good to make a scene.”

Emery stays focused as Villa chase a ninth straight win

While Sancho’s outburst grabbed headlines, Aston Villa’s attention remains on Sunday’s trip to West Ham, where they aim to extend their winning streak to nine matches. Despite a slow start to the campaign, Villa have surged to third in the Premier League.

Emery insists the squad is managing expectations well.

“We are not feeling under pressure. We are demanding collectively and individually. Each match is a test, and Sunday is a huge one against West Ham away.” — Unai Emery

The Spaniard praised West Ham’s recent performances under Nuno Espírito Santo, warning his side must maintain intensity to stay in the top three heading into Christmas.

Despite flashes of technical quality, he has struggled to reach match sharpness or build trust within Emery’s system, which relies heavily on defensive discipline and high-intensity transitions — areas where Sancho has often been criticised at previous clubs.

He is expected to return to the bench against West Ham.

Sancho must respond — not react

In our view, Some may defend a player showing emotion, the nuance is that Sancho has yet to demonstrate the consistency, sharpness or discipline needed to earn a Premier League start under Emery.

From covering Sancho’s time at Manchester United, public reactions to setbacks have been a recurring theme. Emery is a manager who values professionalism and tactical obedience above all else — visible frustration risks eroding trust further.

Sancho is desperate to revive his career and may be reacting from competitive instinct. But in elite dressing rooms, reactions matter.

The loan spell is drifting — and January could define it

If Sancho doesn’t break into the team by the new year, discussions about cutting the loan short or adjusting his role will inevitably follow. Villa expected a motivated, rejuvenated forward; so far, they have seen flashes but not reliability.

Unbelievable, can’t understand why he’s like this. How many chances does someone need.
