Jacob Ramsey returns to Villa Park this weekend hoping his dramatic winner at Tottenham marks a genuine turning point in his Newcastle United career.

The 24-year-old midfielder left his boyhood club Aston Villa last summer in a deal worth an initial £39 million plus add-ons, joining Newcastle the day after the sides drew 0-0 on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Now, he prepares to face Villa away from home for the first time since that move.

Eddie Howe backs Jacob Ramsey ahead of Aston Villa reunion

Ramsey opened his Newcastle account on Tuesday, coming off the bench to score the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory at Tottenham. Eddie Howe believes that moment could prove significant.

“It can never be underestimated how difficult that is, for any player to leave a club that you’ve been associated with for so long,” Howe said.

“Then, you have to feel that immediate new identity with the team you’ve joined. That takes longer for some people than others.

“I’m not saying that was the case for Jacob, because I don’t know how he felt deep down.

“Certainly the first few weeks and the first few games you play can be difficult in a new team, especially if it’s a slightly different way of playing.”

Having followed Ramsey’s integration this season, his early months were disrupted by injury and adaptation to Newcastle’s midfield structure. The goal at Spurs may represent a shift in confidence as much as output.

Professionalism praised amid slow start

Howe was keen to underline Ramsey’s attitude during a challenging transition period.

“He had a lot to take in. I have to say that he has done it all with real professionalism.

“There have been no issues with him. He has worked really hard at his game. He has been really conscientious and really good around the training ground.

“I think he has settled in really well with his teammates. He has good friendship groups, and he looks really happy.”

The Newcastle manager suggested that tangible contributions on the pitch are often what cement belonging.

“There is nothing better than actually contributing and helping your team win a game. There’s no better way to feel part of the Newcastle family than that.

“That will be a big turning point for him, hopefully.”

Emotional return to Villa Park

Facing Aston Villa at Villa Park adds another layer to Ramsey’s recent progress. The club where he developed and broke through into senior football remains closely linked to his identity.

It remains too early to conclude that one goal signals a sustained surge in form, but the timing of his breakthrough could not be more significant.
