Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna expressed mixed emotions after his side’s incredible fightback secured a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park against Everton. Trailing 2-0 due to goals from Beto and Dwight McNeil, Ipswich responded with a stunning 30-yard strike from Julio Enciso before George Hirst’s late header completed the comeback.
McKenna praised the resilience and talent of his team, especially the impact of Enciso, who had been limited in action this season due to injury. The point was valuable for Ipswich, already relegated, but a testament to their never-give-up attitude despite the challenges they faced.
Kieran McKenna’s Praise for Julio Enciso
McKenna could not hide his admiration for the talent of Julio Enciso, who has made a significant impact since joining Ipswich on loan from Brighton in January. McKenna lamented the limited time he had with Enciso this season due to injury, but the 21-year-old Paraguayan’s quality was on full display against Everton.
“Julio has an incredible showreel for a young player. It’s frustrating we haven’t had him for more of this season. He can win games with his individual quality, and he certainly made a difference today.” — Kieran McKenna
Enciso’s goal in the 41st minute was a moment of brilliance that turned the tide and set the stage for Hirst’s equalizer in the 79th minute. McKenna noted that despite the struggles, the team has always believed in Enciso’s potential.
George Hirst’s Growth and Impact
McKenna also took time to discuss the importance of striker George Hirst, who netted his fifth goal of the season in just five starts and 21 substitute appearances. Hirst’s header not only leveled the game but highlighted the strides he has made in his development.
“George has had some frustrating spells this season with injuries, but he’s shown great improvement. His goal today was a reward for his hard work and progress. He’s developing really well.” — Kieran McKenna
