Ilia Gruev Leeds United midfielder has delivered a clear message to supporters frustrated with the club’s goal-scoring struggles. Leeds’ 1-0 defeat to [Fulham], decided by a Gabriel Gudmundsson own goal, extended their run without a strike from open play to four matches. The result leaves Daniel Farke under pressure to find answers ahead of a vital trip to [Wolves], but Gruev insists patience is key.
The Bulgarian international, speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, emphasised the importance of “trusting the process” and sticking to Farke’s principles rather than panicking. Ally McCoist’s criticism of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin for a missed chance against Fulham has only heightened the conversation around Leeds’ blunt attack, while youngster Harry Gray has staked his claim for selection after scoring a hat-trick for the under-21s.
Gruev, however, urged calm: “I think it’s going to be in our favour because I think we will get better and better from week to week. Of course, you will have some weeks where maybe you don’t perform like you have to, like you want to, maybe lose a game, but the whole process, I think, is more important, and I think we are in a good way.”
Gruev calls for patience amid Leeds’ struggles
Leeds’ season so far has produced just one goal — a Lukas Nmecha penalty on the opening day. Since then, the team has failed to find the net in three consecutive league games, totalling 277 minutes without a goal from open play.
“Nobody expects us to go to Wolverhampton and score a lot of goals. Of course, if it happens, great, but we want to stick to our principles, we want to play our football, and then it will come, the goals will come, I’m sure.” — Ilia Gruev, BBC Radio Leeds
The midfielder also highlighted positives, pointing to Leeds’ improved defensive structure. “We didn’t concede in two games. Unfortunately, against Fulham, in the last minute, it was a tough one. But we want to keep our structure, to play our football.”
Leeds United’s goal drought in context
According to LUFCData, this marks the longest barren spell in front of goal under Daniel Farke’s tenure. The previous worst run was two consecutive scoreless games in April 2024, against [Sunderland] and [Blackburn].
| Leeds 2025/26 Premier League stats | After 4 matches |
|---|---|
| Goals Scored | 1 (penalty) |
| Goals from Open Play | 0 |
| Minutes Without Goal | 277 |
| Clean Sheets | 2 |

While Leeds’ attack has faltered, their defensive resilience in two games offers a platform. Farke’s challenge is to translate control and discipline into cutting-edge moments.
Analyst Verdict
FootballPlace analyst John William sees Gruev’s comments as an attempt to steady nerves:
“Ilia Gruev is right to emphasise the process. Leeds are compact and organised, which gives them a chance in every game. But football is ultimately decided by goals, and without greater output from Calvert-Lewin or creative support from midfield, the pressure will only grow. Wolves away is crucial — a game against the league’s bottom side where Leeds simply have to find the net.”
Key Insights
- Leeds United have gone 277 minutes without a goal from open play.
- Gruev insists supporters should trust Daniel Farke’s process.

What’s Next for Leeds United?
Leeds face Wolves at Molineux, a fixture that could ease attacking concerns if they rediscover scoring form. Sitting bottom of the table, Wolves represent an opportunity for Farke’s side to build momentum and silence critics.
Beyond that, upcoming matches against stronger opposition will test whether Gruev’s belief in the team’s principles can be justified. For now, patience is the message — but only goals can turn calm words into concrete results.
