Chelsea-linked Ian Subiabre nears surprise MLS move from River Plate

Chelsea-linked youngster Ian Subiabre is edging closer to an unexpected move to Major League Soccer after DC United opened formal negotiations with River Plate over the Argentine winger.

The 19-year-old has been monitored by Chelsea since 2025, while Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have also tracked his progress. However, rather than completing a move to Europe, Subiabre now looks increasingly likely to continue his career in the United States.

According to El Intransigente, DC United have begun formal negotiations with River Plate over a permanent transfer.

The Argentine giants are reportedly demanding €6.8 million (£5.9m) net to approve the winger's departure.

At present, the MLS club represents the most advanced option for Subiabre, with discussions between the two clubs already underway.

Subiabre's situation at River Plate has changed dramatically in recent weeks.

The winger has been training away from the club's first-team squad since the beginning of July following a decision taken by River's hierarchy.

Head coach Eduardo Coudet has reportedly distanced himself from the decision, insisting the move did not come from him.

As a result, the player's representatives have been actively searching for a new club ahead of the new season.

According to the report, tensions increased during the 2026 World Cup after Subiabre participated in an "intercountry" tournament while still under contract with River Plate.

The youngster was subsequently required to explain the situation to sporting director Stefano Di Carlo.

That episode is believed to have accelerated River's willingness to sell one of their most promising academy graduates, despite his contract running until December 2028.

Subiabre has attracted significant interest from the Premier League over the past 18 months.

Chelsea were among the first English clubs to follow the Argentine, before Tottenham and Manchester City also entered the race.

Although European clubs continue to admire his potential, no formal move has materialised.

A transfer to Danish side FC Midtjylland previously came close but ultimately collapsed after Subiabre decided he did not want to continue his career in Scandinavia.

DC United now appear best placed to secure his signature.

Before falling out of favour, the winger made 44 senior appearances for River Plate, scoring three goals and providing three assists.

DC United will continue negotiations with River Plate as they attempt to reach an agreement worth €6.8 million. Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City are expected to keep monitoring Ian Subiabre's progress, but an immediate move to Europe now appears increasingly unlikely.
