PSV Eindhoven are weighing up a January move for Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Hwang Hee-chan, as an escalating injury crisis leaves the Dutch side desperately short of attacking options.

According to Soccer News, who stress the information originates from their own sources, PSV have renewed their interest in Hwang after previously exploring a deal last summer. That approach came in the wake of a serious injury to Alassane Pléa, but negotiations never advanced and the South Korea international remained at Molineux.

PSV pushed into the market

The situation in Eindhoven has since worsened. Pléa has still not recovered from the injury he sustained last August, while Myron Boadu and Ricardo Pepi are also sidelined.

PSV recently rejected a €25m offer from Fulham for Pepi, with the expectation that the Premier League side would return with an improved bid. However, those plans collapsed after Pepi suffered an injury at the weekend that required surgery and is expected to keep him out for up to seven weeks.

With three senior attackers unavailable, Soccer News describe PSV’s current position as an “emergency situation”, prompting officials to intensify efforts to bring in reinforcements before the window closes.

Why Hwang fits the profile

Hwang has been on PSV’s radar for some time and his versatility is a major attraction. The 29-year-old can operate as a central striker or across the front line, offering experience and flexibility that PSV currently lack.

Despite Wolves’ struggles at the foot of the Premier League table, Hwang has remained involved, scoring two goals and registering three assists in 20 appearances this season. He has logged 1,179 minutes in all competitions, underlining his continued importance.

Soccer News label his campaign as “disappointing” in the context of Wolves’ wider form and suggest that, with relegation looking increasingly likely, a January exit could make sense for the player.

Wolves unlikely to sanction exit

From Wolves’ perspective, however, Hwang is not surplus to requirements. His minutes have not dropped since Rob Edwards replaced Vítor Pereira in November, and his regular involvement suggests the club would be reluctant to weaken an already stretched squad.

That makes any deal difficult, even in the face of PSV’s pressing need. The Eredivisie leaders are understood to be assessing multiple attacking options as they look for a solution to their injury-hit frontline.

Key insights

  • PSV face an attacking injury crisis
  • Hwang Hee-chan is a long-term target
  • Pepi, Pléa and Boadu are all sidelined
  • Wolves still rely heavily on Hwang
  • Any January deal would be difficult

What’s next?

PSV’s need for reinforcements is clear, but convincing Wolves to part with a regular first-team player mid-season will be a major challenge. As injuries continue to shape the market, the situation around Hwang Hee-chan is one to watch closely.

Should Wolves cash in on Hwang Hee-chan amid relegation fears — or keep experience on board at all costs?
