Mason Holgate has officially joined Al-Gharafa following his release from Everton — and Rio Ferdinand is fully behind the move.

The 28-year-old defender ended a nine-year stay on Merseyside this summer after being deemed surplus to requirements by David Moyes. Holgate, once a bright academy signing from Barnsley, made 150 appearances for the Toffees but saw his influence wane following multiple loan spells.

The Manchester United legend reacted to Al-Gharafa’s official unveiling video, which showed Holgate meeting teammates in Qatar. The move marks a fresh start for the Jamaican international after difficult loan spells and limited minutes at Everton.

Why Holgate Never Recovered at Everton

Despite showing promise early in his Everton career, Holgate couldn’t break back into the team after the emergence of James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite. Moyes instead prioritised experience, offering extensions to Seamus Coleman and Michael Keane — but not Holgate.

His last full season saw him loaned to West Brom, where he registered decent numbers.

Everton’s Defensive Gaps Remain

Letting Holgate go was expected — but Everton’s back line still needs urgent attention. With just four senior centre-backs available and no backup to Jordan Pickford, Moyes is walking a fine line ahead of a pivotal season.

The club’s failed attempt to land Kenny Tete also highlights their need for full-back reinforcements. The Friedkin Group may need to act fast if Moyes is to avoid another slow start.

What’s Next for Everton?

Expect Everton to dip back into the market, especially for a new right-back and potential Pickford deputy. The defensive rebuild is far from complete.

What do you think — will Holgate thrive in Qatar or did Everton let him go too soon?
