Harry Wilson has finally spoken publicly about how close he came to joining Leeds United on deadline day, confirming the deal was “on and off” right up until the final moments of the summer transfer window.

Leeds came within inches of landing the Wales international as they scrambled for attacking reinforcements late in the window. Now, speaking to Sky Sports, Wilson has lifted the lid on a dramatic final day that left his future hanging in the balance.

Leeds’ late move that nearly happened

Leeds United identified Wilson as a priority target after Facundo Buonanotte opted to join Chelsea on loan from Brighton, a decision that forced Leeds back into the market at short notice.

Reports on deadline day suggested Leeds were confident of securing Wilson’s signature, and managing director Robbie Evans later confirmed the attacker was keen on the move to Elland Road. However, the deal was dependent on Fulhamcompleting a trio of incoming transfers before sanctioning his departure.

Fulham pursued Tyrique George, Kevin and Samuel Chukwueze. They secured Kevin and Chukwueze but missed out on George, ultimately closing the door on Wilson’s exit and leaving Leeds empty-handed.

“I didn’t know where I was going to be”

Wilson has now acknowledged just how close the move came to completion.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the 27-year-old said:

“It was the first time it had happened to me. I’m used to watching it on Sky Sports, so to be part of it was different. My phone was going off every two minutes. It was going to happen, then it wasn’t happening.

Then it was back on, then it was off. I didn’t know where I was going to be. It was a bit of a relief when the window closed and I could concentrate on the football.”

For Leeds United, it was a frustrating end to a long deadline-day pursuit that looked, at times, destined to succeed.

Form that keeps haunting Leeds supporters

Since remaining in west London, Wilson’s performances have only underlined why Leeds pushed so hard. The versatile attacker has been directly involved in eight goals across 16 Premier League appearances this season, becoming one of Fulham’s most reliable creative outlets.

His consistency has not gone unnoticed, particularly among Leeds supporters who saw him as an ideal fit for Daniel Farke’s attacking system.

Contract situation clouds January window

Wilson’s future remains a live issue. He is out of contract next summer, and Fulham are keen to secure a new deal before non-English clubs are free to approach him from 1 January.

Interest is expected if no extension is agreed, but a January move to Leeds now appears highly unlikely. Fulham would be reluctant to strengthen a direct rival in the battle to avoid relegation, even if it meant risking losing Wilson on a free transfer later.

Transfer insider Dean Jones believes Fulham remain confident of tying Wilson down, suggesting hopes among suitors of a cut-price January deal are slim.

Key Insights

  • Leeds United were confident of signing Harry Wilson late on deadline day.
  • The move collapsed due to Fulham missing one of their incoming targets.
  • Wilson believed the deal would happen at several points on deadline day.
  • His current form has reinforced Leeds’ regret at missing out.
  • Fulham are pushing for a new contract with January approaching.

What’s next?

Fulham’s priority is clear: secure Wilson’s future before the January window opens. Talks are expected to continue as the club looks to protect a key asset amid growing interest.

For Leeds, the focus will shift elsewhere. With Wilson likely unavailable, their recruitment team may revisit alternative wide attackers, including younger or loan-market options, as they look to strengthen for the second half of the season.

Much will depend on Fulham’s progress in negotiations, but the window that nearly delivered Wilson to Elland Road now appears firmly closed.

Do you think Leeds missed a golden opportunity by failing to land Harry Wilson — or was the risk too high?
