Hannes Delcroix is already feeling the benefits of his January move away from Burnley, with the defender admitting his confidence has received a major lift since joining FC Lugano.

The 26-year-old left Burnley on a free transfer last week and wasted no time making an impression in Switzerland. Delcroix made his debut for FC Lugano at the weekend, playing the full 90 minutes in a commanding 5–2 victory over FC Luzern as part of a back three.

Positive first impression in Switzerland

Speaking to Corriere del Ticino after the match, Delcroix highlighted how important the performance was for his mindset following a stop-start period in England.

“Winning my first match for Lugano like this can only give me great confidence,” he said.

That confidence appeared evident on the pitch, with Delcroix slotting seamlessly into his new side and showing composure throughout the contest.

Settling quickly with new teammates

The defender also stressed that relationships within the squad are already developing well, something he believes was visible during Lugano’s response to conceding the opening goal.

“The understanding with my teammates is already good, and I think the necessary spirit of solidarity was also evident on the pitch,” Delcroix explained. “We’re a united group, and Luzern noticed this after the 1–0 lead. Our reaction was vehement, but at the same time, we managed to play good football.”

For a player new to the league and the club, such early cohesion has been an encouraging sign.

Burnley exit driven by game time

Delcroix joined Burnley from Anderlecht in 2023 but found opportunities limited, making 15 appearances in all competitions. A loan spell at Swansea City last season brought further minutes, with 12 Championship outings, yet regular football remained elusive.

That lack of consistency ultimately pushed him towards a January exit.

“I was looking for a club that could guarantee me plenty of playing time and an important role,” Delcroix said. “My debut was undoubtedly positive. Now I hope to grow alongside the rest of the team, helping them achieve ambitious goals and, in turn, trying to rediscover my best form as the summer approaches.”

World Cup motivation and European ambitions

Delcroix’s move also carries international significance. The defender is expected to represent Haiti national team at the World Cup later this year, adding extra importance to regaining rhythm and sharpness.

Lugano present a different challenge to life in England, particularly with the Bianconeri pushing for European qualification. They featured briefly in UEFA Conference League qualifiers earlier this season, and Delcroix will be hoping his presence can help extend that journey in future campaigns.
