Granit Xhaka’s remarkable career resurgence continues. The Sunderland captain once again demonstrated his influence on the international stage, earning widespread praise in Switzerland after leading Murat Yakin’s side to victory over Sweden in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
The 33-year-old has been one of the standout midfielders in the Premier League this season, earning a Player of the Month nomination for September after registering two assists and helping Sunderland move seven points clear of the relegation zone. Under new boss Régis Le Bris, Xhaka has flourished — and that form has carried seamlessly into his international duties.
Xhaka dazzles as Switzerland overcome Sweden
Despite facing a Sweden side boasting attacking threats such as Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak, Switzerland kept control throughout the game, with Xhaka setting the tone in midfield. The Sunderland star opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Johan Mazambi sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal.
Swiss outlet Bluewin rated Xhaka’s performance a 5/6, writing:
“The Swiss maestro didn’t have to overplay his talent, yet he touched an immeasurable number of balls. A true driving force in Yakin’s possession game, the Sunderland midfielder sometimes erred on the side of overconfidence, committing a few inaccuracies. But when it came down to it, the captain stepped up to the plate: converting the penalty and opening the scoring in a decisive match for qualification. With a powerful shot from the centre, Xhaka reminded everyone why he wears the armband. Switzerland can count on a captain — a real one.” — Bluewin (Switzerland)
Meanwhile, Le Matin awarded Xhaka the highest rating in the squad (8/10), adding:
“The captain led the way, taking the penalty he never takes — and scoring it. His accuracy, his rhythm, and his calm were invaluable in this high-level encounter.” — Le Matin (Switzerland)
From Arsenal redemption to Sunderland leadership
Xhaka’s revival story continues to grow. After leaving Arsenal in 2023, the Swiss veteran enjoyed two strong seasons at Bayer Leverkusen before returning to English football this summer with Sunderland — a move that initially raised eyebrows but has since proven inspired.
Under Régis Le Bris, he has become the Black Cats’ metronome, dictating play with authority and experience. Compared by some pundits to Kevin De Bruyne for his passing range and influence, Xhaka has silenced doubters with consistent top-level displays.
For Le Bris, Xhaka’s form could not come at a better time. With Jobe Bellingham sold to Borussia Dortmund and Habib Diarra sidelined through injury, the Swiss international has stepped up as Sunderland’s midfield leader.

I think he's one of the best signings Sunderland has done this summer. To be honest I did not expect him to be this valuable at this age anymore. Hopefully he can continu this form and keep Sunderland in the Premier League, but no doubts actually because they overal perform well in the league
