Potter Reflects on Scarles' Challenging Anfield Test
West Ham United manager Graham Potter insists that Ollie Scarles will benefit from his tough afternoon at Anfield, describing the teenager's head-to-head with Mohamed Salah as a "great education."
The 19-year-old full-back, handed a rare start against Liverpool, struggled to contain Salah, who played a direct role in both of Liverpool's first-half goals. Scarles was eventually substituted after 57 minutes, but Potter believes the experience will be pivotal for the youngster’s development.
"It was important that he had the experience. He is playing against the best player, in terms of goals and assists, arguably in the world at the moment," Potter said.
"He won’t face that every day. He won’t face that in the academy. So great education for him and good that he stuck at it."

West Ham “Resilient” in Narrow Defeat
Despite the 2-1 loss — sealed by a late Virgil van Dijk winner — Potter found positives in his side’s performance, especially their ability to frustrate Liverpool and create chances.
"It was a really strong performance; probably the best performance we’ve had. The balance between defence and attack was really good," he said. "We created some good opportunities and pushed a top team back. Defensively, I thought we were quite solid — as much as you can be against Liverpool."
West Ham had equalised through an Andrew Robertson own goal and even struck the bar in the first half. The Hammers now look ahead with a growing sense of maturity in the squad, with players like Scarles gaining valuable top-flight exposure.

SofaScore Rating 6.2

Despite the difficult circumstances, Scarles showed moments of promise in what was arguably one of the toughest assignments for a young full-back: facing Mohamed Salah at Anfield. The 19-year-old managed 32 touches and completed passes at a respectable 84% accuracy, showing some composure on the ball even under pressure.

Defensively, Scarles was dribbled past twice, including on the play that led to Liverpool’s opening goal. He won 3 of 7 duels, which reflects the physical challenge Salah posed, but also shows the teenager’s willingness to engage rather than retreat. He also managed 2 tackles and a clearance before being substituted in the 57th minute.

Importantly, Scarles avoided rash decisions — he committed just one foul and didn’t receive a booking. While the 6.2 SofaScore rating reflects a difficult outing, it’s not uncommon for young defenders against world-class wingers. What matters more is the learning value, something Potter clearly emphasized post-match.

His performance may have lacked polish, but it showed personality and courage — traits West Ham will be keen to nurture.
