Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili says he remains patient about his role at Anfield, insisting his “time will come” as he prepares for a rare starting opportunity in the Champions League.

The Georgian international is expected to start against Galatasaray on Tuesday night after first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker missed the trip to Turkey with a minor injury suffered in training.

Giorgi Mamardashvili set for Champions League chance

Alisson did not travel with the Liverpool squad as a precaution ahead of the Champions League round-of-16 first leg at Rams Park.

His absence opens the door for Mamardashvili to make what could be the biggest appearance of his Liverpool career since joining from Valencia last summer in a deal worth around £29m.

The 24-year-old has largely played a backup role behind the Brazilian goalkeeper but now has the opportunity to feature in a crucial European fixture.

Liverpool goalkeeper accepts backup role

Speaking on Liverpool’s official Reds Roundtable programme alongside Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, Mamardashvili explained that he understands the patience required to succeed as a goalkeeper.

“My ex-goalkeeper coach told me I had to find a balance between ambition and patience. So I keep working hard and you never know when your chance is coming.”

He acknowledged the difficulty of competing for a position where only one player can start.

“It’s never easy because there is just one goalkeeper. But if I don’t play, I don’t mind. I just have to work hard every day. My time will come, for sure.”

Mamardashvili also suggested that his opportunity may take time to arrive.

“Maybe not this year, but my time will come.”

Adaptation period at Liverpool

Mamardashvili revealed that adapting to life at Liverpool took time, particularly due to language barriers during his first months at the club.

However, he credited teammates for helping him settle.

“The most important thing for me was the support because I didn’t speak much English. Mac Allister and Alisson helped me and now I speak much better.”

The goalkeeper also shared a story about his father, who worked as a goalkeeping coach and played an important role in shaping his mentality.

“In a tournament in Georgia I saved three penalties in the final, but my father gave the best goalkeeper award to someone else because I had made a mistake in the semi-final.”

The lesson, he explained, helped develop the resilience needed to play at the highest level.
