Aston Villa’s difficult start to the season has placed renewed scrutiny on Ollie Watkins, with Ian Wright delivering blunt criticism that left fellow pundit Gary Neville taken aback. Gary Neville shocked by Ian Wright’s Ollie Watkins criticism – captures the heated debate as Villa’s misfiring striker faces questions about his form and finishing.

Unai Emery’s men entered 2025/26 with high expectations despite an underwhelming summer transfer window overseen by former football operations chief Monchi. Instead, five league games have yielded just three points, while Watkins remains goalless across six appearances in all competitions. Monchi’s departure only adds to the uncertainty at Villa Park.

The striker, once linked with a move away, has stayed put but finds himself under pressure to rediscover the sharpness that made him such a force in 2023/24. Wright, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, argued that Watkins’ finishing is holding him back, and urged him to focus on clinical one-touch efforts inside the box.

Ian Wright: Watkins must sharpen finishing instincts

“As a player, I think that he should be doing more for what he’s capable of doing. He’s a channel runner, gets in the box, he gets on the end of things. I think he could be a lot sharper with his finishing, and I thought that’s what he’d be working on. Just like the one touch finish or the touch finish on both sides… he just doesn’t do that enough.” — Ian Wright, Stick to Football podcast

Wright’s comments, while measured, were still striking given his reputation for supporting strikers. Neville, sat alongside him, admitted he was “surprised” to hear such pointed words from the Arsenal legend, though he conceded the criticism was valid.

Neville: “I’m surprised” at Wright’s blunt verdict

“I’m surprised, that’s a big criticism from you because you are obviously I think qualified.” — Gary Neville, Stick to Football podcast

Neville’s reaction underlined just how stark Wright’s assessment was. Yet both men agreed that Watkins has the tools to improve – if he sharpens his finishing instincts and regains confidence in front of goal.

Watkins’ dwindling goal record at Aston Villa

Watkins’ recent numbers reveal why the criticism has surfaced. After a career-best season in 2023/24, his output has declined steadily:

Season Games Goals Goal Ratio
2022/23 40 16 0.40
2023/24 53 27 0.51
2024/25 54 17 0.31
2025/26 6 0 0.00

Those numbers show Watkins remains a hard-working forward but is struggling to provide the goals Villa desperately need.

Analyst Verdict – John William

FootballPlace analyst John William believes the focus on Watkins mirrors Villa’s wider malaise:

“Watkins has always been more than just a goalscorer – his work rate and pressing are vital to Emery’s system. But with Villa struggling, the lack of goals makes him an easy target. Wright is correct that he must improve his finishing, yet the bigger picture is that the entire attacking unit looks off the pace.”

William added: “Emery has the pedigree to fix this, but Watkins rediscovering his touch will be crucial. Without him firing, Villa’s season will remain an uphill battle.”

What’s Next for Watkins and Aston Villa?

Villa host Fulham before heading into a testing run of fixtures, including Europa League action. Watkins’ drought cannot last much longer if Villa are to revive their top-six ambitions.

For Emery, the task is to rebuild confidence across the squad while coaxing his No9 back to his best. If Watkins responds to Wright’s challenge, the criticism could prove a turning point.

👉 Do you agree with Ian Wright that Ollie Watkins isn’t doing enough, or is Villa’s wider form the real issue?

I mean in the end it's the team around you right? Yes, he should have done better in some occasion, not fair to call him out, the whole team isn't performing.

I disagree mate, he’s a striker. 0 goals in 6, that’s not ok. You need goals to win the games, he lacks everything as a striker. You can’t hope and wait, Emery should change.
