Newcastle United 4–1 Manchester United
St. James' Park – April 13, 2025
Manchester United’s woes deepened as they suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat away at Newcastle United, who dominated proceedings from start to finish on a chilly Sunday afternoon.
The build-up to the match was dominated by talk of André Onana's absence. Head coach Ruben Amorim confirmed pre-match that Onana had been given time off to "mentally reset," allowing Turkish backup Altay Bayındır a rare start. It would prove costly.
Newcastle took the lead in the 24th minute when Sandro Tonali, returning from suspension, played a clever ball through to Alexander Isak, who slotted home the opener with composure.
Manchester United responded briefly. In the 37th minute, Alejandro Garnacho equalized with a well-taken finish after a flowing move from midfield. However, that was as good as it got for the Red Devils.
After the break, Harvey Barnes began to take control. He restored Newcastle's lead with a calm strike after a sharp team move, then doubled his tally — and made it 3-1 — with a stunning top-corner finish, aided by a slip from Noussair Mazraoui in the build-up.
Things went from bad to worse for United when Bayındır attempted a risky clearance outside his box, only for the ball to bounce off Joelinton’s head and fall kindly to Bruno Guimarães, who fired in Newcastle's fourth.
Newcastle’s dominant performance sees them solidify their European ambitions, while Manchester United's chaotic defending and goalkeeping errors raise more questions for Amorim’s future plans.
