Wolves begin low-cost rebuild with Gassama approach

Wolves have begun exploring lower-cost options ahead of the summer window, with Nathan Gassama emerging as a defensive target.

According to reports from Africa Foot, the Premier League side have initiated contact over a potential move for the Baltika Kaliningrad centre-back. Wolves currently sit bottom of the table after one win and six draws from 26 league matches, trailing 17th-placed Nottingham Forest by 18 points.

With relegation to the Championship a real possibility, preparations for squad restructuring are already underway.

Wolves invested heavily across the last two windows, spending close to €150 million on reinforcements. Adam Armstrong and Angel Gomes were among those to arrive during the winter period.

However, results have not followed. Under Rob Edwards, the club now appear to be pivoting toward a more conservative recruitment model, prioritising lower-cost signings with resale potential.

Having followed Wolves’ recruitment pattern this season, the shift reflects both financial pragmatism and competitive necessity. Should relegation occur, wage structure and squad balance would need recalibrating quickly.

However, it remains too early to confirm how firmly this strategy is set, particularly with survival mathematically possible.

Gassama, a Mali international, joined Baltika Kaliningrad in 2023 and has since made 69 appearances across competitions. Primarily a centre-back, he also featured at left-back during the Africa Cup of Nations, adding tactical flexibility to his profile.

Reports indicate Wolves’ recruitment team closely monitored his performances in Morocco and were encouraged by his athleticism and positional adaptability. Initial contact has reportedly been made, and the player is said to feel ready for a move to England.

The 23-year-old is under contract until 2028. While Transfermarkt lists his valuation at €1 million, any summer transfer fee would likely exceed that figure given his contract length and international exposure.

Wolves’ immediate focus remains survival, but transfer groundwork is clearly underway. Further scouting and negotiation stages would be expected before any formal bid is lodged.

Much will depend on their league status at the end of the campaign. Relegation would likely accelerate cost-conscious recruitment, while survival may expand options.
