Tottenham Hotspur face a critical Europa League quarter-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday — but attention is also turning to the potential departure of one of their key January signings: Mathys Tel.
The 19-year-old forward, who arrived on loan from Bayern Munich, has made an impressive impact since joining, but his long-term future in North London is now under serious doubt.
Bayern Set to Recall Tel for Club World Cup
According to Football Insider, Bayern intend to recall Tel this summer to include him in their squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The decision would cut short any hopes Spurs have of retaining him beyond this season unless a permanent deal can be agreed.
Tottenham reportedly have a £45 million option to buy the French youth international outright. However, should the club fail to qualify for European football, convincing Tel to remain in London could prove difficult — especially with Bayern eager to bring him back into the fold.
A Rare Bright Spot in Spurs’ Struggles
Since arriving in January, Tel has featured 11 times across all competitions, scoring three goals and offering a spark for a Tottenham side that has fallen to 15th in the Premier League after a recent 4-2 defeat to Wolves.
With Ange Postecoglou's men needing to win the Europa League to secure a Champions League berth, the pressure is immense — and losing Tel would be another major setback for a squad already under scrutiny.
“He’s shown his talent in a short space of time,” a Spurs source noted. “But if there’s no European football next season, it will be hard to keep him.”
Tel’s ability to play both centrally and from the left makes him an asset in Postecoglou’s fluid front line, and Tottenham are expected to negotiate a reduced fee in the coming weeks to try and keep him in the Premier League.
Mathys Tel – Tottenham Stats (January 2025 – Present)

Tel’s contributions have come in important moments, often stepping up during Spurs’ difficult run. His pressing, movement off the ball, and end product have made him a standout performer since his arrival — one of the few bright spots in a turbulent campaign for Postecoglou.
Should Tottenham break the bank to keep Mathys Tel at the club next season?
Is he the kind of player Spurs should build around — or is the £45M price tag too steep?

They can break whatever bank they want. I don't think Tel is willing to join Spurs.
