Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard has spoken out after a disappointing loss to Bournemouth, admitting that his side’s failure to maintain control of the game following their early lead is a concern ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Despite contributing an assist for Declan Rice’s opening goal, Ødegaard’s performance has been criticized by some Arsenal fans, who question his ability to deliver in crucial matches.

The Gunners went on to lose 2-1 after failing to capitalize on their first-half dominance, leaving Ødegaard with mixed feelings as they look to overcome PSG and secure a spot in the final. Arteta’s trust in his captain remains unwavering, but Ødegaard’s comments have raised concerns ahead of the midweek clash.

Ødegaard’s Worrying Admission: Lack of Control Against Bournemouth

Despite leading 1-0 through Rice’s goal, Arsenal failed to double their advantage, conceding twice after set-piece errors. Ødegaard admitted that the team lost control of the game after Bournemouth’s equalizer, which is a concerning sign heading into a high-stakes match against PSG.

“We got the goal and felt like we controlled pretty much everything, but they score and we lose control of the game. The second half is not acceptable.” — Martin Ødegaard

Ødegaard stressed that the mental lapse must be addressed quickly, especially with PSG’s high quality. Arsenal cannot afford such mistakes if they are to secure their first Champions League final appearance since 2006.

Ødegaard played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s only goal, delivering a precise through ball to Declan Rice, who rounded the goalkeeper to score.

However, his performance was marred by a defensive lapse during Bournemouth’s second goal, where he was outmuscled by Evanilson at a corner.

Despite the loss, Ødegaard’s creativity and vision in midfield remain crucial for Arsenal, especially with the upcoming Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

Arteta’s Confidence in Ødegaard: A Captain’s Role in PSG Clash

Despite the criticism, Mikel Arteta continues to back Ødegaard as Arsenal’s captain, knowing his leadership is vital for the Gunners’ Champions League aspirations. Arteta has full trust in Ødegaard’s ability to perform in the most important matches, including the PSG second leg, where he is expected to lead by example.

“Martin is a fantastic leader. He is the captain, and I trust him to take us forward. He’ll be ready for PSG.” — Mikel Arteta

Key Call-Outs:

  • Martin Ødegaard admits Arsenal’s loss of control against Bournemouth is concerning ahead of the PSG second leg.
  • Ødegaard’s assist for Declan Rice was not enough to prevent a 2-1 loss at home.
  • Jurrien Timber’s fitness is in doubt for the PSG clash, potentially forcing Ben White to fill in at right-back.
  • Mikel Arteta continues to back Ødegaard despite criticism, with Arteta calling him a strong leader for Arsenal.

What’s Next for Arsenal?

With PSG up next, Arsenal faces a must-win situation in Paris. Arteta’s men will need to address the mental lapses from their recent Bournemouth loss if they hope to reach the Champions League finalØdegaard and his teammates must deliver a much-improved performance to stay in contention for Europe’s top prize.

They've no chance to go through against PSG. it's not a shame, PSG has been really good once they've added Kvara into the squad.
