Troy Parrott has revealed why he chose Tottenham Hotspur over Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Celtic earlier in his career, admitting the decision ultimately came down to instinct.
The AZ Alkmaar striker, speaking in a detailed interview with Voetbal International, reflected on the moment he had to decide between several interested clubs before joining Tottenham’s academy in 2017.
Troy Parrott explains Tottenham decision
Before moving to north London from Belvedere, Parrott attracted interest from Everton, Wolves and Celtic. He also spent time training with Manchester City and Aston Villa as a youngster.
Looking back, the Republic of Ireland international said the feeling he got from Tottenham proved decisive.
“In the end, I had to choose between Spurs, Everton, Wolves, and Celtic,” Parrott explained.
“Tottenham gave me the best feeling. I felt incredibly welcome there, which is especially important at a young age.”
Parrott added that his transition into football came quickly after balancing boxing and Gaelic football as a child in Ireland.
“Less running, more scoring: I loved it straight away,” he said of his move into a striker role at Belvedere.
Career after Tottenham exit
Parrott spent seven years with Tottenham but made only four senior appearances before departing permanently in July 2024 to join AZ Alkmaar.
He has since rebuilt his reputation in the Eredivisie.

From following his progress in the Netherlands, Parrott has developed into a more complete forward, combining movement in the box with sharper decision-making in transition.
However, it remains too early to suggest how differently his path might have unfolded had he chosen Everton, Wolves or Celtic instead.
