Rasmus Højlund Manchester United exit appears increasingly permanent after the striker admitted his move to Napoli has revitalised both his form and confidence.
The Denmark international joined Napoli last summer on a loan deal with a conditional obligation to buy. Since arriving in Naples, he has scored 12 goals in all competitions, including eight in 21 Serie A appearances and three in the Champions League.
Speaking to Il Mattino, the 23-year-old made clear he has no regrets about leaving Old Trafford.
Rasmus Højlund Manchester United exit validated by Napoli form
Højlund described his growth under Antonio Conte and compared his scoring rhythm to a bottle of ketchup.
“I’m like ketchup. When the sauce doesn’t come out, you’re there, struggling to get it out, then suddenly it all comes out at once.
“It’s the same when you don’t score for a long time. It’s an incredible joy to score, but when the team and the coach believe in you, the goal is like a flower that has to bloom, it’s just a matter of time.”
The forward has become a trusted focal point in Conte’s system, particularly during Romelu Lukaku’s absence. His role centres on attacking space, running channels and holding up play, responsibilities that have suited his physical profile.
Having followed his Premier League spell closely, the difference in service is noticeable. Napoli’s structured build-up provides him with more consistent delivery into dangerous areas.
However, it remains subject to confirmation whether the conditional obligation to buy will be formally triggered at the end of the season.
Conte influence and Naples adaptation
Højlund credited Conte with helping him manage games more intelligently.
“When I was in Bergamo, I was impatient; I wanted to get everything done quickly. I pressed constantly, as if I didn’t have a second chance.
“Now I manage my energy better; Conte guides me consistently. I always press hard because that’s what the coach asks of me, but I try to conserve my energy so I can use it at the right time.”
He also spoke warmly about Naples, dismissing negative stereotypes about the city.
“I sense the incredible energy the city exudes. It’s an underestimated city, not even a little dangerous, despite so many rumours from afar.”
Napoli’s Italian Super Cup success earlier this season reinforced his belief that the move aligned with his ambitions.
“I came here because I wanted to win trophies, and winning the Italian Super Cup was proof that my choice was the right one.”

What’s Next
Napoli are pushing to secure Champions League qualification, which could activate the permanent clause in Højlund’s loan agreement. Continued form in the final months of the season would strengthen his long-term role in Conte’s project. Manchester United’s involvement will likely end once contractual conditions are met, but official confirmation is expected later in the campaign.
Has Højlund finally found the system built around his strengths?
