Newcastle United are officially in the market for a new central midfielder, as confirmed by Eddie Howe in an interview with The Chronicle. The Magpies boss admits that the club are "looking" to reinforce the middle of the park before the Premier League season begins — and ideally before their Champions League return.

Howe’s admission comes as depth issues threaten to undermine what should be an exciting season at St James’ Park. With Longstaff and Anderson both gone and Joe Willock sidelined, Newcastle are operating with just four fit midfielders.

Why Newcastle Need Midfield Reinforcements

Despite boasting a strong starting trio of Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, Newcastle are now light in the centre of the pitch — especially with Willock nursing a knock and Lewis Miley still in development.

“We want six [midfielders] – and now we are down to four,” Howe told The Chronicle. “That is an issue for us and it is a position we are looking at.” — Eddie Howe

Though Willock’s injury isn’t expected to be long-term, Howe has admitted the club had hoped for more depth heading into the new campaign.

Current Newcastle Midfielders – 2024/25 Season Stats

Player Age 2024/25 Appearances
Bruno Guimarães 27 47
Sandro Tonali 25 45
Joelinton 28 37
Joe Willock 25 41
Lewis Miley 19 14

Newcastle’s Midfield Targets – Who Could Come In?

One potential signing is Jack Rudoni of Coventry City. The 23-year-old impressed in the Championship last season and could add ball-carrying ability and goals from deep midfield positions. However, he is seen as more attacking than Longstaff and would represent a stylistic shift.

Another option is promoting from within. Travis Hernes, who spent time on loan at Aalborg last season, is viewed as a future squad player — but whether he’s ready for Champions League-level depth remains to be seen.

Analyst Verdict: Failure to Reinforce Could Prove Costly

With the extra demands of Champions League football, fixture congestion, and injury risk, Newcastle can’t afford to gamble on depth. Losing Longstaff without replacing him has created a void, and relying on Bruno, Joelinton and Tonali every game isn’t sustainable.

The window is still open, and Newcastle have shown in the past that they prefer quiet, focused business — but fans will be watching anxiously as the season opener looms.
