Miguel Almirón Newcastle United story may have officially ended earlier this year when he left for Atlanta United, but the Paraguayan forward has shown he still holds the Magpies close to his heart. Almirón revealed on Instagram that Newcastle sent him a Carabao Cup winners’ medal after their March 2025 triumph — a competition he had helped them progress in before departing.

The 31-year-old, affectionately known as ‘Miggy’ among fans, featured in earlier rounds of the tournament and played his final official match for Newcastle in the semi-final at Southampton. Though he was no longer at the club when Eddie Howe’s side lifted the trophy at Wembley, the gesture ensured his contribution was recognised.

Almirón shared his gratitude: “I am grateful to have received this medal; it brings back so many wonderful memories. Thanks to Newcastle United, the coaching staff, my former teammates and, of course, the incredible fans. Your support has always meant so much to me. You will always have a special place in my heart and I will always support you.”

Almirón’s Newcastle legacy

The Paraguayan attacker arrived from Atlanta United in 2019, becoming the club’s then-record signing. Over six Premier League seasons, he made 186 appearances, scoring 23 goals and providing six assists. Known for his relentless work rate, pressing, and infectious smile, Almirón became a fan favourite at St James’ Park.

His time at Newcastle also produced standout moments, including two Premier League Goal of the Month awards. He shared images of those trophies alongside his Carabao Cup medal on Instagram, reminding supporters of the memorable highlights he delivered in black and white.

Emotional connection beyond football

For Newcastle, the gesture reinforces the club’s family ethos under Howe and its commitment to recognising players who contributed to their journey. For Almirón, it reaffirmed the special bond he had with the fans and the city. His public tribute shows just how deeply he valued his time on Tyneside.

FootballPlace analyst John William summed it up:

“Almirón’s story at Newcastle is not just about goals and assists; it’s about effort, spirit, and the bond he forged with the supporters. The club’s decision to send him a medal is a classy move and shows how football is about more than silverware. For many fans, Almirón embodied Newcastle’s fighting spirit during a transitional period, and this gesture ensures his legacy endures.”

For Newcastle, the Carabao Cup triumph has set higher standards. With Champions League game also on their radar tonight against Barcelona, Howe’s side will need new heroes to step forward, but the culture of respect shown to past contributors like Almirón will only strengthen the club’s reputation.
