Cody Gakpo to Bayern Munich from Liverpool is creating real friction inside Säbener Straße.

While Bayern’s interest in Anfield teammate Luis Diaz is broadly agreed upon at the club, Gakpo has become a more divisive figure.

Despite an impressive 2024/25 campaign, where the Dutchman tallied 18 goals and 7 assists across 49 matches, Bayern’s decision-makers remain split — with some questioning whether he’s even an upgrade on Serge Gnabry or Kingsley Coman.

Max Eberl Pushing Hard for Gakpo – But Board Not Convinced

“Not all of the other bosses are convinced. The question being asked internally is: is Gakpo really better than what we already have?” — Christian Falk, CF Bayern Insider

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl is Gakpo’s strongest supporter. But the club’s supervisory board sees Nico Williams and Luis Diaz as higher-priority targets.

According to CF Bayern Insider, without full board approval, the Gakpo deal will be “difficult to push through.”

Diaz vs Gakpo: By the Numbers

Pure output gives Gakpo a slight edge over Diaz this past season — despite playing fewer minutes. But when it comes to creative influence and dribbling metrics, Diaz edges ahead.

Player Goals Assists Goal Contrib. per 90
Cody Gakpo 18 7 107.84 mins
Luis Diaz 17 8 133.44 mins

The DataMB analytics platform also shows Diaz as the more consistent creative outlet, while Gakpo’s “attacking actions” — a combination of shots, dribbles and crosses — show he’s no passenger in the final third.

Analyst Verdict

Gakpo’s statistical return can’t be ignored. But Bayern's interest in Nico Williams and Diaz suggests they want flair and penetration over raw output. Unless Eberl sways the board, Gakpo might be the odd man out.

Key Insights

  • Gakpo’s 2024/25 output surpassed Diaz's in goals per minute
  • Max Eberl wants him, but Bayern’s board is hesitant
  • Luis Diaz and Nico Williams lead the winger shortlist
  • Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli is also under Bayern watch
  • Gakpo’s Anfield future may depend on Bayern backing down

Should Liverpool sell Gakpo now or hold out for Bayern to make a formal bid? Drop your verdict below and join the fan debate!

After what happened with Jota, I don’t see this transfer happening. Cody had a better year than Diaz just looking at the stats
