Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has criticised aspects of the team’s performance after their heavy defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, suggesting the Blues showed “immaturity” late in the match.

Liam Rosenior’s side were beaten 5-2 at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their last-16 tie, leaving Chelsea with a major challenge ahead of the return match at Stamford Bridge.

The French defender played the full 90 minutes in Paris and admitted the team paid a heavy price for their mistakes against the reigning European champions.

Bradley Barcola opened the scoring early for PSG before Malo Gusto equalised for Chelsea. Ousmane Dembélé restored the hosts’ lead before halftime.

Chelsea fought back through Enzo Fernández to make it 2-2 in the second half, but PSG scored three late goals through Vitinha and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to secure a commanding advantage.

Fofana believes the final stages of the match exposed a lack of discipline from Chelsea.

“We’re very disappointed because we made mistakes and we paid the price. They’re a great team and we were punished every time we made a mistake.” — Wesley Fofana

“Immaturity” comment raises questions

The Chelsea defender also questioned the team’s decision-making late in the game, suggesting the tactical approach should have changed once PSG regained control.

“When it was 4-2 we still wanted to press even though the game was over. We just had to hold onto the 4-2 score before the second leg.” — Wesley Fofana

Fofana added that conceding a fifth goal made the situation far more difficult ahead of the return leg.

“Then we conceded that fifth goal which hurts even more. We have three goals to make up.” — Wesley Fofana

SG capitalised on Chelsea mistakes

Despite Chelsea creating several opportunities, PSG were ruthless when chances appeared.

The figures suggest Chelsea generated more expected goals but PSG converted their chances more effectively.

Liam Rosenior facing difficult second leg

Chelsea appointed Liam Rosenior in January and the manager has overseen encouraging progress overall.

In his first 16 matches in charge, the Blues have won 10 games and scored 40 goals, although the defeat in Paris represents one of the toughest results during his tenure.

Chelsea will now attempt to overturn the three-goal deficit when PSG travel to Stamford Bridge.

History suggests comeback unlikely

Turning around such a deficit in the Champions League knockout stages is rare.

UEFA statistics show only three clubs have previously overturned a three-goal deficit in the second leg of a Champions League tie.

Those comebacks were achieved by Deportivo La Coruña against AC Milan in 2004, Roma against Barcelona in 2018 and Liverpool against Barcelona in 2019.
