Newcastle set to sign AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw for £30m, with Eddie Howe giving the green light.
Newcastle United are closing in on the £30m signing of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, providing a much-needed boost for Eddie Howe after a difficult summer window.
According to TBR Football, Thiaw’s arrival is seen as a major win for Howe, who has watched several targets slip away — including Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United — while dealing with the ongoing Alexander Isak situation.
The German international centre-back has been on Newcastle’s radar since last summer, when a deal collapsed late on. This time, with terms agreed, the move is expected to be completed in the coming days.
Howe’s Verdict on the Deal
TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey reports Howe is “delighted” with Thiaw’s capture, believing the 22-year-old ticks “so many boxes” for the defensive rebuild.
“At the price they are getting him for, around £30million, Newcastle are delighted. They think he has a huge ceiling and a lot of improvement in him, despite already being a German international.” — Graeme Bailey, TBR Football
The Paul Mitchell Factor
Although former Sporting Director Paul Mitchell left Newcastle in June, he played a key role in identifying Thiaw as a target last summer. While Mitchell’s time at the club divided opinion among fans, this deal stands as one of his lasting contributions.
Bailey noted: “He’s one who first looked at Thiaw, but Eddie Howe was always in agreement — which was maybe rare — and he’s a player they both wanted.”
Mitchell’s departure has left Howe with more control over recruitment, with Jack Ross stepping in as Head of Football Strategy until a new Sporting Director is appointed.
Malick Thiaw’s 2024/25 defensive stats:
| Stat (2024/25) | Malick Thiaw |
|---|---|
| Appearances (Serie A) | 22 |
| Clean Sheets | 8 |
| Tackles (per 90) | 1.17 |
| Interceptions (per 90) | 0.80 |
| Clearances (per 90) | 4.07 |
| Aerial Duels Won (per 90) | 2.41 |
| Blocks (per 90) | 0.56 |
Analyst Verdict
From a tactical standpoint, Thiaw’s blend of aerial dominance, pace in recovery, and composure on the ball fits Newcastle’s high defensive line under Howe. At £30m, his age profile and international experience make him a long-term investment.
While defensive recruitment looks positive, Howe still faces pressure to resolve Isak’s future and add depth in midfield before the window shuts.
Key Insights
- Newcastle to sign Malick Thiaw from AC Milan for £30m.
- Eddie Howe “delighted” with the deal after a tough summer.
- Paul Mitchell first identified Thiaw last year.
- Alexander Isak situation remains unresolved.
What’s Next
Thiaw’s arrival is likely to be followed by further activity if Newcastle can resolve ongoing contract and transfer issues. A decision on Isak’s future could shape the rest of Howe’s summer business.
Is Thiaw the defensive signing Newcastle needed — or should Howe have aimed even higher?

Please, never take something from (with all respect) Graeme... Never seen so much nonsense from someone. I think Howe and Mitchell has done a very bad job this summer for Newcastle. They've missed on a lot of good players... Not only Mitchells fault tho, I think Howe is one of them.. not convincing player to join Newcastle United. It has been embarrassing summer.
