Fer López Wolves move remains one of the more contentious summer transfers, with Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo reporting that the midfielder’s early struggles in England have been greeted with a degree of satisfaction back in Vigo.

López joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in a €25m deal facilitated by Jorge Mendes, who exploited contract terms that allowed the player to move for significantly less than his €40m release clause. While the move was considered financially advantageous for Celta, many supporters were left furious at seeing yet another academy product leave early.

Anger over transfer still lingers

Celta fans voiced strong opposition when the deal was confirmed, with the feeling that the club had been outmanoeuvred. The board’s decision to sell for €25m rather than insist on the €40m clause deepened frustration. The midfielder himself came under fire online, forcing Celta to issue a public statement defending him.

But while Celta have been able to rally in response, López has not yet answered on the pitch.

Slow Premier League start

Since arriving at Molineux, López has found minutes hard to come by. He has featured in just three of Wolves’ opening four Premier League games, all as a substitute, totalling 58 minutes. His only start came in the EFL Cup win over West Ham.

Even his recent inclusion in Spain’s U21 squad has been treated with scepticism in Spain, framed more as a reward for last season’s form than current contributions. His debut against Kosovo marked his first appearance at any level for La Roja.

“His time in England hasn’t started as he had hoped, with just 58 minutes in the league. Celta fans are watching closely, and some are not hiding their pleasure.” — Estadio Deportivo

The numbers underline the slow start: promising in flashes but yet to make a tangible impact in the Premier League.

Analyst Verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William believes time is still on López’s side:

“Fer López is 21 and adjusting to the physicality of the Premier League. Wolves are struggling as a whole, so it is unfair to judge him solely on these first weeks. But because of the controversial transfer, every mistake or quiet performance is magnified. For Celta fans, the anger is still raw, which explains the schadenfreude.”

Key Insights

  • Fer López moved to Wolves for €25m amid controversy over his release clause.
  • Celta Vigo fans remain angry at the sale but are thinly disguising their delight at his slow start.
  • López has only 58 Premier League minutes across three games so far.
  • His Spain U21 debut came despite minimal playing time this season.
  • Wolves’ poor form amplifies the pressure on the young midfielder.

What’s Next for Wolves and Fer López?

For Wolves, the priority is finding rhythm after losing all four Premier League matches to start the campaign. Integrating López gradually could pay off, but the team’s struggles mean patience will be limited.

For López personally, a full league start feels like the next crucial step. Strong displays in upcoming fixtures could flip the narrative and quieten critics in both England and Spain. Until then, his slow start will continue to be a source of debate — and for some in Vigo, quiet satisfaction.

👉 Will Fer López prove Celta Vigo wrong for doubting him, or will Wolves come to regret their €25m gamble?
