Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler has criticised Arsenal’s game management during their 1-0 Premier League defeat at the Amex Stadium, calling on the league to introduce clearer rules to address time-wasting.

Bukayo Saka’s deflected ninth-minute strike secured the victory for the Gunners, a result that moved Mikel Arteta’s side seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Despite Brighton dominating possession and creating the better chances, they were unable to find an equaliser as Arsenal defended resolutely during the closing stages.

Fabian Hürzeler criticises Arsenal time-wasting tactics

The match became increasingly tense as Brighton players and staff grew frustrated with what they believed were repeated attempts by Arsenal to slow the game down.

Hürzeler had already raised concerns before kick-off about the time Arsenal take during restarts. After the final whistle, the Brighton manager intensified his criticism and suggested referees need greater support from the Premier League.

“There’s different kinds of winning. If they win the Premier League, no one will ask how they win the Premier League. You can really feel they do everything to win this game. In the end it is about the rules.” — Fabian Hürzeler

The Brighton boss also claimed referee Chris Kavanagh admitted during halftime discussions that it can be difficult to penalise time-wasting effectively.

“They make their own rules. At the moment I have the feeling they are doing their own rules no matter how they are playing. We need clear rules because then you can protect the referee.” — Fabian Hürzeler

Brighton frustrated despite strong performance

Brighton controlled large periods of the match and produced several chances, finishing with more possession, more shots and a higher expected goals figure.

Hürzeler insisted he remained proud of his players’ approach despite the defeat.

“I loved how we played football. I think there was only one team that tried to play football today and therefore I'm proud how they did it.”

Mikel Arteta responds to criticism

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta declined to engage directly with Hürzeler’s comments after the match.

“What a surprise. You just go back to previous games and you’ll find a lot of comments like this always. I love my players and I love the way we compete.” — Mikel Arteta

Having followed Arsenal’s campaign closely this season, the team has often demonstrated resilience when protecting narrow leads. However, it remains too early to determine whether such matches will prove decisive in the final stages of the title race.
