Everton found themselves at the centre of a short-lived Turkish transfer saga on Friday, after negotiations involving Betoand Youssef En-Nesyri collapsed almost as quickly as they began.

The sequence of events began when Beto’s agent travelled to Istanbul for talks with Fenerbahçe. The Turkish giants are actively searching for a striker ahead of the deadline, with En-Nesyri expected to leave before the window closes.

Fenerbahçe made an approach related to Beto, although it remains unclear whether the proposal was formally submitted to Everton or discussed directly with the player’s representatives. What is clear is that Beto is open to a move, having slipped behind Thierno Barry in the pecking order at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Swap proposal quickly shut down

Soon after news of Beto’s agent arriving in Istanbul emerged, reports surfaced claiming Everton had once again enquired about En-Nesyri. The Toffees had previously explored a deal for the Morocco international earlier in the window, including a proposed swap involving Beto.

Those earlier attempts, which also involved interest from Nottingham Forest, were rejected as En-Nesyri prioritised a move to a warmer climate. However, with negotiations advancing between the striker and Juventus in recent days, Everton appeared willing to test the waters again.

That effort failed almost immediately.

According to Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, the proposed swap deal was abandoned after En-Nesyri made it clear he had no interest in moving to Merseyside.

“Negotiations between Fenerbahçe and Everton regarding a player swap involving Youssef En-Nesyri and Beto have failed,” Sabuncuoğlu reported. “Youssef En-Nesyri did not want to go to Everton, and the swap talks have stalled.”

Beto discussions remain active

Despite the collapse of the swap idea, Everton’s involvement in the talks has not ended. Manager David Moyes played down speculation of a Beto departure on Friday, stressing that he currently lacks depth in attacking areas.

Nevertheless, the presence of Beto’s agent in Istanbul — and photographic evidence of meetings taking place — suggests movement behind the scenes.

Saturday’s edition of Sabah reports that Fenerbahçe remain determined to push ahead with a deal for Beto. While En-Nesyri is now out of the equation, fresh talks are expected to continue over the weekend as the Turkish club seek a solution before deadline day.

Key Insights

  • En-Nesyri has refused a move to Everton.
  • Swap talks involving Beto collapsed quickly.
  • Beto’s agent held talks in Istanbul.
  • David Moyes has publicly downplayed an exit.
  • Fenerbahçe remain keen on signing Beto.

What’s Next

With En-Nesyri no longer part of the picture, negotiations are expected to refocus solely on Beto’s future. Whether Everton are willing to sanction a loan or push for a permanent deal will determine how quickly this situation develops.

As the window enters its final phase, Everton’s striker situation remains fluid — and closely tied to developments in Turkey.

Should Everton cash in on Beto now or keep him as cover for the run-in?
