In a season filled with disappointment for Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, both clubs have a lifeline in the form of the Europa League. As these two giants aim for redemption, Emmanuel Petit has raised questions about whether either team deserves to join Europe's elite next season, despite the prospect of qualifying through the Europa League triumph.

Tottenham and Manchester United’s Unlikely Europa League Lifeline

Despite their disastrous Premier League seasons—Tottenham struggling in 16th and Manchester United only slightly better in 14th—both clubs find themselves on the verge of the Europa League final. Tottenham has a comfortable two-goal advantage heading into their second leg against Bodo/Glimt, while United boasts a commanding 3-0 lead over Athletic Club after a standout performance at San Mamés.

But former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit isn’t convinced. The Frenchman argues that both clubs are hardly deserving of a Champions League spot, especially considering the poor domestic form they’ve shown this season. According to Petit, these clubs are essentially getting a “shortcut” to the Champions League, and he believes that would be unfair.

“Tottenham and Manchester United both have the chance to save terrible seasons in the Europa League, but does either side deserve to play in the Champions League next season? Absolutely not. Both teams don’t deserve to be among the Champions League teams for the next season.”

Petit’s frustration lies in the way the two clubs could leapfrog other sides who have been more consistent over the course of the season. Despite the underwhelming performances in the Premier League, these clubs are still on the cusp of Champions League qualification.

The Stakes: Europa League Final Looms

With both clubs on the brink of making it to the final, there’s a lot at stake. Should Tottenham and Manchester United advance to the final, they could face off in an all-English showdown, with one team claiming a spot in next season’s Champions League.

For Tottenham, manager Ange Postecoglou has claimed that winning the Europa League would turn what has been a poor campaign into a success. He remains optimistic, despite the team’s struggles in the league.

“You [the media] would love us to say that Bodo are a small club, but they are here on merit. I don’t underestimate anyone and they’ve earned the right to be here.”
— Ange Postecoglou

On the other hand, Manchester United will look to complete the job at Old Trafford after their dominant 3-0 win in the first leg against Athletic Club. With United’s domestic form in disarray, winning the Europa League could be their only chance to return to Champions League football next season.

What do you think? Should Tottenham and Manchester United be allowed to qualify for the Champions League via the Europa League despite their poor league performances? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
