Enzo Maresca expects Pep Guardiola comparisons at Manchester City

Enzo Maresca has admitted replacing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City is an "impossible" challenge, acknowledging he expects to be judged against the club's most successful manager almost immediately.

The Italian, who previously worked under Guardiola during City's Treble-winning campaign, officially begins a new era at the Etihad knowing expectations remain exceptionally high after his predecessor's remarkable success.

Speaking during City's pre-season tour in Seoul, Maresca insisted comparisons with Guardiola are inevitable but said they will not distract him from building his own team.

Guardiola departed Manchester City after winning 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, leaving his successor with one of the biggest jobs in European football.

Maresca believes scrutiny will arrive quickly.

"After 10 games, if we have got 10 points, 20 points or 30 points, people will be comparing it to Pep after 10 games."

Despite that pressure, the 46-year-old says he remains focused on implementing his own ideas while acknowledging Guardiola's influence.

"He is the best manager in the world over the last 15 or 20 years."

Ahead of taking charge, Maresca revealed he spent time with Guardiola in Barcelona discussing the Manchester City squad before deciding he also needed to form his own opinions.

"I like to go in empty sometimes to see things for myself. He was here so long and has his opinions, but you have to arrive and see things for yourself."

The City boss also confirmed he is still deciding on his leadership group following Bernardo Silva's departure.

Ruben Dias, Rodri and Erling Haaland are among the candidates, although Maresca admitted selecting Haaland as captain could create practical issues because he regularly wants his skipper to receive tactical instructions from the touchline after goals.

Manchester City will continue their preparations for the new season under Maresca before competitive action begins later this month. One of the Italian's immediate priorities will be naming his captain and continuing to implement his tactical approach as the squad adapts to life after Guardiola.
