Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has expressed his delight at working with his Stamford Bridge squad as the Blues look to build on a successful first year under his management.
Maresca guided Chelsea to a top-four finish, a Conference League triumph, and then the Club World Cup in New Jersey after a commanding win over Paris Saint-Germain. Those achievements reestablished Chelsea’s European pedigree and set the stage for a return to the Champions League.
Despite a shortened pre-season, the Italian coach says his excitement about developing his team is as strong as ever.
“From my point of view, I’m so excited and so happy to be with this team and this squad after a good season,” Maresca explained ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Brighton. “To think about how we can improve players or improve the team, for me, it’s so exciting. That’s why I arrive very early and leave very late. If we improve players, we can improve the team.”
Chelsea’s tricky start and response
The new campaign has brought challenges. Chelsea suffered defeats to Bayern Munich and Manchester United but steadied themselves with a comeback victory over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup.
Maresca believes those experiences will strengthen his squad:
“The last week’s results haven’t been the best for us, but I think we have started quite well in the Premier League. We are growing. Even for me, the Lincoln game was a very tricky one. In the future, we will face that kind of football again, and we will be better because we will know how to deal with it.” — Enzo Maresca
Chelsea currently sit just two points off second place in the Premier League after four games and have advanced to the Carabao Cup fourth round.
What’s next for Chelsea?
The Blues host Brighton at Stamford Bridge this weekend before turning their attention to a Champions League showdown with Benfica and a blockbuster Premier League meeting with Liverpool.
Maresca insists the team is moving in the right direction: “I have the feeling that we are improving, and we continue to go in the right direction.”
Analyst Verdict
FootballPlace analyst John William says Maresca’s approach shows long-term commitment:
“Maresca is building Chelsea not just as a team but as a project. His emphasis on improving individuals is very much in line with modern elite coaching. The early setbacks will test his resolve, but his positivity and clarity suggest Chelsea have the right man to guide them through.”
He added: “The Brighton match is key — win it, and Chelsea carry momentum into Benfica and Liverpool. Lose it, and the questions resurface.”
