The English Football Association (FA) is pushing for a lifetime ban for Lucas Paquetá, the creative midfielder from West Ham United, following allegations of breaching betting regulations.
Paquetá is accused of deliberately receiving yellow cards in four Premier League matches between November 2022 and August 2023, specifically against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United, and Bournemouth. The FA stated that Paquetá allegedly tried to influence the course of the game, its behavior, or other aspects by intentionally earning yellow cards. The supposed aim was to manipulate the betting market for financial gain, although Paquetá himself was not directly involved in gambling. It was claimed that friends and family of the Brazilian midfielder had placed bets, with reports suggesting one bet involved £7 and another £400.
In August 2023, Paquetá was questioned by the FA, which led to the collapse of a potential dream transfer to Manchester City. As a result, his club, West Ham United, missed out on a transfer fee of €95 million.
Since then, the FA asserts that Paquetá has failed to provide necessary information, violating one of the FA’s rules. After a subsequent interview in September 2023, Paquetá allowed the FA to examine his phone a month later. The investigation is expected to conclude in about three weeks. Initially, Paquetá was facing a ten-year suspension, but now the FA is seeking a lifetime ban.
